Joseph Caldwell is an acclaimed playwright and novelist who has been awarded the Rome Prize for Literature by the American Academy of Arts and Letters. He is the author of five novels in addition to the Pig Trilogy, a humorous mystery series featuring a crime-solving pig. Caldwell lives in New York City and is currently working on various writing projects.

This wonderful trilogy tells a story only one blessed with consummate and exquisite blarney could tell. Imagination does not come close to the unique flavor of these stories...remarkable, touching, humorous, inventive, and set in a landscape and culture rich in beauty and wisdom. There is no relating these stories without spoiling the rich rewards that awaits the reader...but know the characters -- two and four legged --- are fully formed, the plots fully developed and remarkably original, the language beautifully wrought and flavored with enough Tullamore Dew to sweeten the telling, and the lessons to learn.....ahhh, the lessons are for each reader to find his own favorites in a cornucopia of possibilities. And finally the legends unleashed or perhaps newly grown -- are magnificent --- as any American born Irish lass must agree.

I loved all the twists and turns in this Irish tale. I liked that it wasn't at all predictible. The author does have a love of big, pompous words, but it worked in this story, and stretched my mind.

Mr. Caldwell has developed a good story line and has a really lovely dry wit and turn of words to show us the incredibly silly things right in front of us that turn a terribly somber situation into a 'laugh at yourself' chuckle. He demonstrates just how much we take ourselves too seriously sometimes! Have fun!!

It's probably unfair to rate all three novels having only made it part way through the first, but the humor in these novels is of the dumb rural type and simply did not resonate with me. Not funny, and the mystery just failed to really get any traction or capture my interest. Rather the reverse. The more I read, the less I cared who did what.
