Hospitalization rates for COPD across Canadian cities

Overall*, hospitalizations for COPD have increased over time for Canadians younger than age 75. Hospitalization rates increased from 83 per 100,000 population for the period 2006 to 2010 to 86 per 100,000 population for the period 2011 to 2015.

The gap between the lowest- and highest-income neighbourhoods has widened over time. Overall*, for those in the lowest income quintile, hospitalizations per 100,000 population were 4.5 times higher for the period 2006 to 2010 and 5.7 times higher for the period 2011 to 2015, compared with those in the highest income quintile. The rate for the lowest income group increased from 168 hospitalizations per 100,000 population to 201 hospitalizations. The rate for the highest income group decreased from 37 hospitalizations per 100,000 population to 35 hospitalizations.
