A new song by Prince's late father is being released to celebrate what would have been the jazz pianist's 101st birthday.

Heart Of Mine will be released as part of the late musician's posthumous album Don't Play With Love, The John L Nelson Project.

Nelson, also known as Prince Rogers, would have turned 101 on Thursday.

The record is being produced by Prince's half-sister Sharon Nelson and released by the artist's famous recording studio, Paisley Park.

"We are making his music available for the world to hear," Ms Nelson said in a statement.

"Contrary to what has been written about our dad, he was a loving, caring, hardworking father, and a prolific jazz musician most notably known as the father of the musical genius, our brother Prince."

"Our dad wrote and composed many songs, but they were never recorded until now. He was Prince's musical inspiration, and this project is very special because it was recorded in Paisley Park."

More on Prince

Earlier this year, the legal case over Prince's estate came to an end, with a judge ruling his six siblings to be his rightful heirs, including Ms Nelson.

Nelson performed with the Prince Rogers Trio as a jazz pianist and co-wrote some of Prince's songs, including Computer Blue from the Purple Rain album.

The late pop star was inspired by his father, who he first saw sing when he was just five.

"It was great, I couldn't believe it," Prince said in one of his rare interviews. "People were screaming. From then on I think I wanted to be a musician."

John L Nelson died in 2001 aged 85. His album will be out on 27 October.
