Hardcover. Condition: Very Good. No Jacket. Illustrated with One Hundred and Ten Designs by J.D. Watson, Engraved On Wood by the Brothers Dalziel (illustrator). "A New Edition." A large, heavy, leather-bound octavo of 3 lbs. 10 oz., xxii, [ii], 408 pp., with 110 designs by John Dawson Watson (1832-1892), engraved on wood by the Brothers Dalziel. Bound by Hayday in full brown pebbled morocco over beveled boards with five raised bands and marbled endpapers, All Edges Gilt. (The Dutch marbled endpapers show no "dot" under 10X magnification.) Rounded leather spine with gilt titles and foliate ornaments to panels; the boards with a series of frames in blind with gilt corner pieces and fancy dentelles. Modest rub to edges of leather spine, only. Scattered foxing, though never heavy enough to obscure any text or art. A period hand has dated the first blank "March 29, 1864," and inscribed "F. Williamson from Harriet Richfield." Small bookseller's label to bottom of front pastedown reads: "Bought of Willis and Sotheran / Booksellers & Bookbinders / 42, Charing Cross." "Watson's Pilgrim's Progress (Routledge, 1861), like his Robinson Crusoe, is now among the rarer books of the period. You must search long and patiently for a 'first,'" (Reid. "Illustrators of the Sixties," p. 169.) A lovely copy. 376 pp. (408 pp. if we include the "Notes.") Reduced from $525.
