On Monday, January 11, 2021, Steven L. Cunningham, Sr., 70, departed his earthly life and transitioned to his heavenly home. Steven was born on July 27, 1950 to the late Robert Lee and Mable Price Cunningham, in Charlotte, NC. He was the second oldest child of the Cunningham clan of six. Steve, as he was known by all, began his education at University Park Elementary School, attended Northwest Junior High School and he graduated from West Charlotte Senior High School in 1968 to pursue a two-year degree at Central Piedmont Community College.
At an early age, Steve was baptized at Grier Heights Presbyterian Church and never changed his membership. He understood that he couldn’t go one single day without God in his life. Steve was a quiet and reserved man. He was very much into men’s fashion and was always dressed impeccable. His attire always included coordinating hat and shoes no matter the occasion. He was never without a hat on his head. He liked to keep a clean, neat car. This sometimes required him to go out to do a sponge off right after a short drizzle.
He was the Carolina Tarheels basketball team’s #1 fan, a passion for the sport of basketball led him to teach his youngest brother and son to play and love the game as much as he did. He was an avid collector of Invicta watches and his collection outnumbered in the 100s. Steve began his work career as a mail clerk/carrier for Southern Bell and after several promotions, retired 31 years later as a Special Services Technician from then BellSouth which is now AT&T. After retirement, he worked security for The Charlotte Bobcats and traveled with the team. This was pure enjoyment for him because it was all about basketball.
He loved his family and leaves to cherish his memories a first born son, Steven Jr. (Tiwana); daughter, Leslie Dawkins (Terral); grandchildren, Decorey Gaiten, Brandon Cunningham, Imari Cunningham, Ryan Cunningham, Zaria Hope, Vanessa and Khadejah McCloud; three greatgrandchildren; brothers, Robert Cunningham Jr., Aaron Cunningham (Taye), and sister, Pat Cunningham; and a host of nieces, nephews,
and other relatives and friends.
