University Press returns with another short and captivating portrait of one of history’s most compelling figures, John Boehner.
John Boehner is one of America’s most influential political leaders of the 20th and 21st centuries. Before he stepped down as Speaker of the House of Representatives and retired from Congress in 2015, he was an ardent champion of conservative causes, a vocal advocate for his constituents, and a force to be reckoned with in the Republican Party. Yet he understood the value of compromise and he shared a deep mutual respect with his congressional colleagues on both sides of the political aisle.
Born in Reading, Ohio to a large, hard-working, Catholic family, John Andrew Boehner grew up with 11 siblings in a two-bedroom one-bathroom house, began working in the family-owned bar at age eight, played linebacker on his high school football team, enlisted in the U.S. Navy, worked his way through college as a night shift janitor, became the first person in his family to graduate from college, got married, had two daughters, was rapidly promoted to president of a sales firm, was elected to local and state political offices in Ohio, was elected to the United States Congress, served as America’s 53rd Speaker of the House of Representatives, retired from Congress, and has recently unleashed scathing criticisms of fellow Republicans.
This short book tells the intensely human story of a man who is changing the world in a way that no one else can.

Save your time

In anticipation of John Boehner's book "On the House", I decided to read this brief biography. While it was a short book, it was so poorly written it was difficult to get through. The author (unknown) gathered a lot of often unimportant facts and threw them in. For instance, at a job while attending college he met a woman who worked in customer service and they started dating. Who was she? Did they later marry? Also, the author talks about the population growth of a small town whose name was changed because there were already two dozen towns with the same name. Who cares!!?? I soon gave up on this book, finding myself wanting to take a red pen to it. Total waste of time!

Speaker of the House, “Together Divided”
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 12, 2021Verified Purchase
This is about a man who became Speaker of the House and was exposed for many years to the “work together” atmosphere that was once throughout Congress and found it increasingly difficult to remain in Congress once the “stay divided” atmosphere started taking over. I’m glad that he is enjoying life now and can reflect on his flaws as well as his accomplishments. Overall a good read, I expect that we will be seeing a lot more books of people talking about how it once was in Congress.

John Boehner Ohio Speaker of the US House of Representatives
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 15, 2021Verified Purchase
From 2011-2015 John Boehner held the position of Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives who took an early retirement in 2015. He believed there was a major flaw in the principles and values of the current Republican Party and decided that he no longer wanted to be a part of it. It is also believed that he was pressured by the party to take early retirement in light of some political controversies that the book goes over in several chapters. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in learning more about political scandals and controversies.

No child left behind
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 15, 2021Verified Purchase
A great introduction to John Boehner career. It helps the reader understand his political role. He is was the man that introduced the NO child left behind act. As an educator this has never been a great intent to aid children learn skills but rather teach them how to take standardized tests. Overall, good information that allows the reader a starting point to dwell deeper into this politician.

Waste of time.... buy Boehner's book "On the House" instead
Reviewed in the United States 🇺🇸 on April 25, 2021Verified Purchase
This is so bad, it does not even have an author listed. It is simply shown as "University Press". I bought it thinking it might be useful before I read Boehner's book, "On the House"
This book-- really more a pamphlet size of about 50 pages---- is really bad. I don't think those who gave it 5 stars actually read it. It's badly written, and just simply not worth wasting your time on it.
