Calc 2/MA166 Curve

Question❓

Does anybody know if Calc 2 has a big curve. I'm sitting at a 58 right now and still have the final which is 20% on the grade and I'm hoping to pass with a C+/B-.

Honestly I think anything more than a C is a stretch in your case. I finished with a 71 last semester and got curved up to a C+. So only about 7-8% curve.

Decent chance that it gets curved up to a C if you get in the B range for the final. C+/B- might be a stretch but you never know for sure. This is speaking from 162 experience though.

The curve is by the whole class and not by your recitation class which it typically is.

isn’t the exact percentage of the curve dependent on original grade to though? not that the curve you mention is meaningless but i’m just trying to clarify

There is probably going to be a decent sized curve but will probably still be pretty hard to come back from a 58 unless you do extremely well on the final tbh

I mean if I get a 60 on the final then I will pass.

Based on the curve in 165 and comparing the exam averages this semester in 166 to 165 that would probably get you a d+ or c- as the cutoff for a c- was a 58 in 165 and the exam averages have been slightly higher in 166

Well a 58 is my grade before the final. And if get a 60 on the final I will have a 70% final grade before a curve.

Oh I thought you meant you had a 58 percent on all assignments so far not 58 percent of the total available points my bad. You should definitely be good to pass and would probably end up with a c+ based on 165 curve

I'm not sure the curve is going to be that big this year, everyone has been scoring relatively well.

Not really, the exam 3 average was historically bad and offset the high averages for exam 1 and 2 so as long as the final is not super easy it should probably be a normal curve which for that class is quite large

Kenji said he purposely made it that way so that the class overall average would be towards the departments desired level (approx 70/75). Considering the average for exam 3 was a little above what he wanted it to be since there was a free question due to an error writing the exam - and he said the final is “medium difficultly” I wouldn’t be surprised if the curve was only 2-3% at most

I would expect more than that he said he purposely gives out more A’s and B’s in 165 and 166 than they give in 161 and 162 since the students tend to be better and the exam averages are only a little better than they were in 165 which had a massive curve

I finished with a 77 and got a C+, there was basically no curve this year.
