The second round of the 2014 AMA Supercross Series in Phoenix, Arizona is now a thing of the past, and despite a head cold and a tough crash in his final timed practice session of the day, James walked away from Chase Field with a respectable fourth-place finish in the night’s main event. Here’s what JS7 had to say about working on the bike, battling through his illness, and more…

BIO

The son of a motocross dad, James Stewart Jr. followed in the footsteps of his father, James Stewart Sr. “Big James” loved motorcycles so much that just two days after James was born, he took his first son on a ride. Three years later “Little James” started riding his own motorcycle and entered his first race the following year. Success soon followed as he won the first of his 11 amateur titles when he was just six years old. Big James trained his son from the outset and the duo eventually developed James’ innovative riding style to shave seconds off the fastest competitors. With his sons promising career ahead of him, in 1997 Big James purchased 40 acres in Haines City, FL, in order to create a practice track in the family’s backyard. Fine-tuning his trade at the “Stewart Compound”, James “Bubba” Stewart became the first African-American to dominate the sport of motocross. After racking up a record-breaking 11 American Motorcyclist Association Amateur National titles James was named the 2002 Rookie of the Year in his debut professional season. In 2004, he won both the AMA 125 East Supercross Championship and the AMA 125 Motocross National Championship. Four years later, and after coming back from knee surgery, he became the second rider in history to complete a perfect motocross season - 24 wins in 24 races - to run away with the 2008 Motocross National Championship. He capped off his perfect season with the AMA Speed Athlete of the Year award and earned the title, “Fastest Man on the Planet”.

James has made many other impressions on the world of sports by being the first motocross athlete to truly transcend his endemic world into mainstream media. Known for his vibrant personality and big smile, James has been featured in news outlets like Rolling Stone, The New York Times, Maxim, ESPN The Magazine, GQ and many more. Additionally, Teen People named him one of “20 Teens Who Will Change the World”.

James has always pushed the limits both off and on the bike from developing the “Bubba Scrub” now commonly imitated by the best athletes in the world to walking away from a lucrative gear sponsorship to create his own brand - Seven - to progress the technology available to riders around the world. Besides racing motorcycles, James’s other passion is playing golf. From playing with some of the top PGA pros in the world near his home in Orlando to taking time off between races during the season in Southern California, it’s a good bet that you’ll find him either on a motorcycle or a golf course.
