Man arrested on sex abuse charges involving children at Owings Mills day care
A retired Baltimore City police officer was arrested on sex abuse charges involving children, Baltimore County police said.
County police said the allegations arose after James Weems Jr. was shot by his wife Thursday at a Washington, D.C., hotel. He is expected to survive and remains hospitalized in police custody pending extradition.
Documents obtained by our sister station, WRC-TV, from the Metropolitan Police Department in D.C. indicate Weems was placed under arrest Monday night at a hospital.
Weems, 57, is accused of sexually abusing as many as three children while working at The Kidz Kastle Child Development Center, a day care facility in Owings Mills, run by his wife, county police said.
"He faces multiple charges at this point, including assault and sexual abuse against a minor. We may have additional charges filed in this case since this is an open investigation," Baltimore County police spokeswoman Joy Lepola Stewart said.
Baltimore County police said detectives opened a possible sex abuse case earlier this month after a child made a claim.
"We've been working closely with the Metropolitan Police Department in reference to this case and charges we have here in Baltimore County, as well as events that unfolded in D.C. last week," Lepola Stewart said.
Baltimore County police said an investigation continues. Families can call Baltimore County detectives at 410-307-2020.
According to court records and police documents, Weems' wife, Shanteari "Shaney" Weems, told investigators she shot her husband after learning that he allegedly sexually abused children at the day care she operates.
Her attorney, Tony Garcia, said the charges against James Weems Jr. confirm Shanteari Weems' worst fears. Garcia said Shanteari Weems went to the Mandarin Oriental hotel to confront her husband about the child sexual abuse allegations. According to his client, James Weems Jr. snapped and charged at his wife, who defended herself, Garcia said.
"We're standing by our client. You know what I mean? Our client says she was defending herself, and we're standing by it and we're standing by her. And, we'll be proceeding going forward in that vein," Garcia said outside a D.C. court on Monday.
A court hearing for Shanteari Weems scheduled for Monday was postponed to Friday.
James Weems Jr. is a former Marine and a former police officer who served Baltimore City from 1996 until his retirement in 2005. He then worked as a contract specialist for the BPD until 2008.
Business records show James Weems Jr. was a director for the day care.
