Found adjacent to Buckingham Palace between the Canada Memorial and Victoria Memorial, the Canada Gate marks the entrance to Green Park on the northwestern edge of Westminster. Finished in 1911, this ornate gate is marked with several coats of arm denoting the provinces of Canada as they were at the time of its completion.

It might come as no surprise that the gate exists so far away from Canada proper; Canada was much more closely tied to the UK at the time of the landmark's creation; it became confederated in 1867 but British Parliament still had a say in its political activities, even only in ceremony, until the late twentieth century.

Answer: Glasgow

The oldest building in Glasgow, the Gothic Glasgow Cathedral was constructed between the twelfth and fourteenth centuries atop what would become the greater city, the largest in Scotland and one of the largest in the British Isles. Glasgow, found on the River Clyde, sits in the Scottish Lowlands and was built in its strategic location, connecting to the Atlantic to the west, to take advantage of that boating route.

This would come in handy during the Industrial Revolution when Glasgow would become one of the most critical UK cities for growth and economy.

Answer: Lugano

Though not the southernmost Swiss city (that'd be Chiasso), Lugano is quite different from most of the rest of Switzerland because, sitting in the Prealps, it's actually warmer and sunnier than the more mountainous bulk of the nation. Sitting on the beautiful Lake Lugano, it's an Italian-speaking locale because of its proximity to Italy, only a short jaunt away (along the shores of the lake).

In fact, from the top of Monte San Salvatore you can gaze into the Italian enclave of Campione d'Italia, at one time home to Europe's largest casino.

Answer: Corsica

One of the southernmost points of European France, the cliffside town of Bonifacio looks due south towards the Italian island of Sardinia. Influenced heavily by Italian history and culture, it's still French-speaking but includes a number of landmarks and sites that indicate a long and complicated past. Overlooking the town is a massive citadel operated by the French Foreign Legion while down below is a naturally-sheltered harbour.

The region is also known for its immense, rocky coastline, a popular spot for international cliff-divers.

Answer: Thessaloniki

The second largest Greek city after Athens, Thessaloniki is in the north of Greece in the mountainous stretch that borders North Macedonia and Bulgaria. A coastal city sheltered from the waters of the Aegean Sea by a narrow bay, it's an important port for the local economy and for travellers (as it's a major cruise port of call for the Greek Islands). Due to its important location in the Balkans, Thessaloniki has had a tumultuous history pockmarked by Roman influence, the Byzantine Empire, Ottoman proximity, and more recently, the dissolution of nearby Yugoslavia at the end of the Cold War.

Cabo Espichel, found just south of the Portuguese capital city of Lisbon, is one of the many beautiful destinations along mainland Europe's westernmost edge. Though some destinations to the north of Lisbon (like Cabo da Roca near Sintra) are further west, Cabo Espichel sits on a promontory with great historical significance, especially for religious settlers who took up the space here as far back as the 13th century.

Answer: Darjeeling

Part of the Eastern Himalayas, Darjeeling rests in the middle of far-east India in a narrow part of the nation surrounded by Tibet, Bhutan, Nepal, and Bangladesh. A relaxing destination once used by Indian royalty as a vacation spot, it's one of a handful of world destinations best known for black tea, grown on idyllic terraces up the sides of the Himalayan foothills.

The region is also well-known for its trains which, riding through the mountains, deliver tourists to this otherwise secluded spot.

The mountain Kangchenjunga, found north of the city, is on the border with Nepal. It's the planet's third-highest peak after Everest and K2.

Answer: New South Wales

One of the most visited national parks in New South Wales, Blue Mountains National Park sits on a plateau near the Great Dividing Range in Eastern Australia, only a short drive east of Sydney. The Three Sisters, depicted, are a natural land formation created through eons of erosion.

The site there finds greater significance in Indigenous Australian myth and legend and, to non-Australians, it might be one of the nation's most fascinating 'unknown' natural landmarks. The region is also known for adventure sports including rock climbing, hiking, and canyoning (amongst others).

Answer: Bolivia

The largest lake in South America, Lake Titicaca is also one of the world's highest, straddling the border between Peru and Bolivia in the Andes Mountains. An important site for early civilizations in the region, Titicaca has since become an important ecosystem for hundreds of native species and an important inland site for local commerce.

The lake is fed by numerous Andean rivers. Even though Titicaca is at an elevation of nearly four kilometres above sea level, its waters are run-off that come from even higher elevations.

Answer: Saint Lawrence River

Built in Quebec City in the late nineteenth century, the Ch�teau Frontenac was built as a luxurious stop on the Canadian Pacific Railway line as it cut across one of the longest railroads in the world (from west coast to east coast). Part of the city's old town, it overlooks the important Saint Lawrence Waterway, one of the most crucial rivers in Canada for early life in the nation and for trade during the early days of French and British settlement. Today, the Saint Lawrence is the main waterway cutting through Quebec City, Montreal, and Kingston, Ontario, where it connects to the Great Lakes (and, theoretically, all the way to the far end of Lake Superior in Duluth, Minnesota).
