2. Ski Kachina Peak
Taos Ski Valley, NM
Before 2014, Taos Ski Valley's Kachina Peak (12,481 ft) was only accessible to skiiers and boarders via a tough 40 minute hike. Today you can ride 1,000 feet up to the summit in the fourth highest chair lift in North America. Called too rad to hate by Powder Magazine, the lift gives skiiers the opportunity to make multiple runs down Kachina in a day. But be warned: just because there is a lift now, doesn't mean this run is for everybody. Kachina Peak is not for noobs.

About 50 miles west of Durango, the Canyons of the Ancients National Monument contains a large number of archaeological sites representing Ancestral Puebloan and other Native American cultures. It covers 176,056 acres with more than 6,000 unique, preserved sites of ancient ruins.

4. Mexican Hat Rock
Mexican Hat, UT
You can find the Mexican Hat Rock on US 163, just 3 miles south of the junction with State Route 261 and northwest of the Four Corners. This 300 foot tall sombrero shaped rock was formed over 250 million years ago, and there are even two rock climbing routes ascending it. It sticks out like a sore thumb on the highway and is an easy photo op if you are on the way to or from Monument Valley.
5. Hike to Rainbow Hot Springs
Mineral County, CO
Along the banks of the San Juan River in the Weminuche Wilderness you will find the naturally heated waters of Rainbow Hot Springs. There are two separate pools that have been constructed and maintained by visitors. The only way to reach the springs is by a 4.5 mile hike, which is well worth the reward of a 105 degree relaxing soak. You can find the trailhead for this hike starting on West Fork Trail about 16 miles northeast of Pagosa Springs on US 160.
6. Bisti Wilderness
San Juan County, NM
The Bisti Wilderness (also called De-Na-Zin) features steeply eroded badlands, which offers some of the most unusual scenery found in the Four Corners region. The Bisti Badlands are an amazingly scenic view with colorful ridges, mounds, and hoodoos - the mushroom-looking weathered sandstone rocks that appear in the form of spires, cap rocks, and pinnacles. The name De-Na-Zin comes from the Navajo word that means cranes.

The Ute Mountain Tribal Park offers an in-depth experience into the history and culture of the native Ute Tribe. It is one of the only nine places in the United States to receive recognition by the National Geographic Traveler as one of the 80 World Destinations for Travel in the 21st Century. The park is only open to the public via guided tours from tribal members who interpret the ancient culture, dwellings, ruins, pictographs, and artifacts of their ancestors.

The Shiprock formation (7,177 ft) appears to be a giant rock protruding directly out of the ground. Believe it or not, Shiprock is actually the ruins of an ancient volcano that originally formed around 2,500 to 3,000 feet beneath the earth's surface. The peak plays a significant role in Navajo culture and tradition. The Navajo word for Shiprock is Tsé Bitʼaʼí meaning "rock with wings," referring to the legend of a great bird that brought the Navajo to their present land.

One of the best spots to see and learn about Ancestral Puebloan organizational and engineering abilities is the Chaco Culture National Historical Park, a location that contains the largest collection of ancient ruins north of Mexico. The ancient Chacoans built sandstone blocks and brought in timber to assemble major complexes, which were the largest buildings in North America until the 19th century. This is also the site of the sun dagger petroglyph.

The 12 mile mountain bike trail at Slickrock brings in over a hundred thousand visitors per year and is certainly not for beginners. There is a 2.3 mile practice loop that first timers are encouraged to try before committing to the exasperating and incredible full route. One of the coolest bike rides in the country, Slickrock is totally unique in its thrilling landscape.

Utah's first national monument is home to the darkest skies in the country and three fascinating ancient natural bridges. The area offers multiple ways to experience these wonders, including hiking, camping, and observing the night sky through them. The Iron Horse Bicycle Classic is Colorado’s largest, oldest and most renowned cycling event. The 50-mile road race covers some of the most beautiful and challenging scenery of the Southwest, following historic railroad lines between Durango and Silverton. 38. Animas Forks
Silverton, CO
The abandoned mining town of Animas Forks has been uninhabited for over a hundred years. After gold and silver were discovered in the town in the 1870s, the town began booming with business. Even after a fire destroyed many buildings in the late 1800s, Animas Forks lasted as a community until the silver market crashed. Now it is one of the most well preserved ghost towns in the country.

Canyon de Chelly is located in northeast Arizona, making it a convenient Four Corners destination. This National Monument was established in 1931, and is the only park that is entirely owned by the Navajo Nation. About 40 families live in the park! There are two rim drives with nine overlooks, two campgrounds, and canyon tours.

The winding US highway 550 is also known as The Million Dollar Highway, running all the way from New Mexico to Colorado. Part of the San Juan Skyway, this highway was built in the late 1880's, and it is one of the most spectacular drives in the USA. Newspaper Rock is a Utah monument that features one of the largest known collections of petroglyphs. This monument is on the national register of historic places, and features hundreds of well preserved Native American drawings of different animals, human figures, and symbols. This 40 year old festival in Gallup, New Mexico (south of the Four Corners) has grown into the second largest hot air balloon rally in North America - second only to Albuquerque's October Balloon Fiesta. Watch the colorful ascension of 200 balloons over the vast desert terrain in Red Rock Park and its backdrop of sandstone bluffs and canyons. The weekend long festival offers free admission with the exception of a $5.00 parking fee.

One of Colorado's 14ers, Mount Sneffels in the Uncompahgre National Forest is known as the Queen of the San Juan Mountains, and it can be seen across the Dallas Divide. Its characteristicly pointed summit is hard to miss. While it might look like quite the trek to reach the top, the two most common hiking routes are only 3 and 6.5 miles one way.

One of the coolest options is the Lava River Cave, which tunnels through an actual hollow tube carved out by lava thousands of years ago.

Take a hike to the only true geyser in the state of Colorado. The short 1.3 mile trail begins about 12 miles east of Dolores, Colorado and has a gentle elevation gain of around 500 feet. The pool at the end of the trail has a geyser at a temperature of aboutu 82 degrees that erupts every 30 to 40 minutes on average. Obviously, don't swim in the pool. This is carbon dioxide and hydrogen sulfide gas we're talking about.

It takes characters to brew beer with character. That's the motto of this ecclectic Durango brewery. Ska was started in 1995 by a couple of guys who weren't old enough to buy beer, so they decided they'd brew their own. Today their unique outpost is a southwestern Colorado staple, and their beer selection ranges from lagers to IPAs and deliciously flavored ciders. The whole vibe of Ska is fun, laid back, and totally unique. You'll want to snag some merch on your next visit.
69. Chockecherry Canyon
Farmington, NM
The Glade Run Recreation Area (or "the Glade") near Farmington is a 19,000 acre playground of public land great for exploring in offroad vehicles, mountain bikes, and even offers some equestrian trails. Chokecherry Canyon is located in the southern end of the Glade within 3,800 acres designated for OHV use. It has been voted New Mexico's #1 off-road trail and offers everything from sandy washes to technical rock crawling.
70. The Mahr Building
Telluride, CO
While visiting Telluride, Colorado and walking around downtown, be sure to look out for this very particular building that you might otherwise miss. The Mahr Building doesn't exactly stand out amongst its rustic neighbors, but more than a hundred years ago (June 24, 1889) it was the site of Butch Cassidy's first robbery. The Telluride bank was taken for $20,000 - which is over half a million dollars today.

The Ouray Alchemist Pharmacy Museum takes you back in time to the wild west days of pharmacological medicine. The museum is host to a collection more than 50 years old that includes over 700 hand blown pharmacy bottles (many containing the original drugs), the oldest prescription in Colorado, and plenty of small touches to recreate the full look of a frontier pharmacy. Mule Canyon, UT
House on Fire Ruin, located in the south fork of Mule Canyon, is a well-known and often photographed ancestral Puebloan ruin in the Cedar Mesa area. Only a 1.5 mile hike to this extraordinary ruin, it is the first of many ruins on this hike. When the sun the ruin at retina times of da, it appears as if flames and smoke are coming out the top of of the house.
73. Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness
San Juan County, NM
Right in the middle of several other locations in the Four Corners region with crazy looking rock formations (Chaco and Bisti) is the Ah-Shi-Sle-Pah Wilderness, featuring bizarre and colorful badlands with everything from dinosaur bones to sandstone hoodoos. The formations you'll find here are similar to those at its neighboring sites: eroded, pointed rocks made of mudstone and shale that were carved out by hundreds of years of moving water.

Stop by the Burger King in Kayenta, AZ and you'll find more than chicken fries and Coca Cola. The fast food joint has "more Code Talker memorabilia than the Pentagon does." Navajo Code Talkers helped the US military during WWII by using their unique tonal language to send and recieve coded messages that Japanese cryptographers were completely unable to break. The son of a code talker opened this Burger King in 1986 and put his memoribilia collection on display there.

This monument is named Bears Ears for a pair of buttes that rise to elevations of 9,000 feet. The monument was established as recently as December 2016 by President Barack Obama.
