I would advise anybody getting the 161 from Puerto del Carmen to Playa Blanca to walk to at least the Casino bus stop on the strip as if you don't you will just stand there and watch bus after bus go by full up!! Services are reduced vastly at the weekends for some reason which is ridiculous considering how busy the island is in January. Also it's market day in Playa Blanca on a Saturday. Also don't make the mistake we did and try and board the bus at Playa Blanca harbour for the return journey - walk to the bus terminal as it's very often full up even late at night. We were quoted €75 euros for a taxi back to Puerto del Carmen. Bus fair is €2.75!! Eventually we caught the 60 to Arrecife and got off at Tias and got a cab from there for €6.
Route 161 Puerto Calero to Playa Blanca
There is only 1 bus stop in Puerto Calero. When the bus arrived the driver waved his arms indicating the bus was full. Then at least 12 people got off and we were the only 2 people waiting but he still refused to let us get on. We waited a further 40 minutes but no further bus appeared. Clearly Puerto Calero is not the place to stay if you are hoping to visit places on the island by bus.
Public buses are a great way to travel around Lanzarote. Bus drivers are friendly and helpful towards tourists. The fares are low; the most that we paid for a single journey was 1.7€. The journey on the 03 bus route from Playa del Carmen to Arrecife was fast - only 30 minutes. So much cheaper than taxis.
Busses are air-conditioned and generally ran to time. For a bus from Puerto Calero into Puerto Del Carmen, it was only 1.40 euro single. 1.40 euro single from Puerto Del Carmen to the Airport (you get charged 20 euros in a taxi). And 2.75 euro from Puerto Del Carmen to Playa Blanca.
Buses run regularly week days, and not so often on weekends and public holidays.
We used the local buses on our recent holidays and found them excellent. Reasonable prices and a nice way to see more local areas too. The buses were always on time and the drivers spoke excellent English and very helpful and making sure we got what we wanted .
On our recent holiday, we found the bus service punctual, cheap, clean and easy to use. They also offer a phone app, which is useful for lines and times.
