There's a new sequel to the original Ghostbusters coming – and here's the first-look trailer

There's something weird, and it don't look good!

They've been teasing us with a follow-up for three decades now, but there's finally going to be another Ghostbusters movie that's set in the original universe.

35 years since the first film (and 30 years since its sequel), it's been confirmed that Jason Reitman – son of Ghostbusters and Ghostbusters II director Ivan Reitman – is carrying on the legacy and making the next one. To celebrate, there's even a brand new teaser:

Sony Pictures is planning to release... let's just call it Ghostbusters III for now... in summer 2020, with filming taking place over the next few months.

It will serve as the next chapter following the original story, and won't be related to the 2016 all-female reboot directed by Paul Feig.

There's no word yet on whether anyone from the original cast will be involved, but Dan Aykroyd did say late last year that "there is a possibility of a reunion with the three remaining Ghostbusters" – meaning himself, Ernie Hudson and Bill Murray. Harold Ramis died in 2014.

Aykroyd and Hudson have both teased their possible involvement on Twitter though, with the former writing: "If you need a tune-up, you know who to call #GB20."

The latter added: "This is bigger than a hundred-foot marshmallow man #GB20."

Jason has co-written the screenplay for Ghostbusters III with Monster House and Poltergeist director Gil Kenan.

Speaking about the project with Entertainment Weekly, Jason said: "I’ve always thought of myself as the first Ghostbusters fan, when I was a 6-year-old visiting the set. I wanted to make a movie for all the other fans.

"This is the next chapter in the original franchise. It is not a reboot. What happened in the '80s happened in the '80s, and this is set in the present day."

The director, who was Oscar-nominated for Up in the Air and Juno, wouldn't give away any plot details, but did tease a little about the cast.

"This is very early, and I want the film to unwrap like a present," he said. "We have a lot of wonderful surprises and new characters for the audience to meet."

Is it summer 2020 yet?
