Robert Kirkman's Invincible Teaser Trailer On Amazon Prime Video

The Boys has been an enormous hit for Amazon’s Prime Video, so it probably doesn’t come as much of a surprise that the first teaser trailer for the streamer’s animated, hour-long Invincible is heavy on the gore and language. But it’s also a faithful rendition of both Robert Kirkman’s (The Walking Dead) vision for the superhero series, and Cory Walker and Ryan Ottley’s art from the comic its based on.

The teaser introduces audiences to Walking Dead‘s Steven Yeun as Mark Grayson, a.k.a. Invincible, a young superhero who can fly, is super strong, and nearly indestructible. He’s also the son of Omni-Man (J.K. Simmons), the most powerful superhero on the planet. As in the book, based on the trailer it looks like we’ll be following Invincible’s origin story as he discovers his powers, gets a costume, and starts to fight crime.

But before you think this is a Spider-Man ripoff, or just Teen Superman, know that the comic has one of the best, game-changing twists in recent history, one that doesn’t come until well in the run of the book. Do yourself a favor: do not look up the Invincible twist, just let it play out, and be as surprised and shocked as comic book readers were, so many years ago.

Invincible isn’t just a return to TV for Kirkman, who also created the supernatural drama Outcast on Cinemax as well as Walking Dead. It’s also a chance for Prime Video to triple down on what’s been working for them. Despite early experiments like the vastly underrated The Tick, The Boys was — as previously mentioned — a huge hit for Amazon. It’s such a winning formula, they’re already at work on Season 3 and a college based spinoff of the series. Though Invincible and The Boys come from two different comic book publishers and creative teams, it’s clear that this take on Invincible, which has been in development for a long time, wouldn’t have happened if Eric Kripke’s similarly violent, brash, but character-based series hadn’t broken records.

The stacked voice cast for Invincible also includes Sandra Oh (Killing Eve), Seth Rogen (This is the End), Gillian Jacobs (Community), Andrew Rannells (Black Monday, Girls), Zazie Beetz (Deadpool 2), Mark Hamill (The Guyver), Walton Goggins (Justified), Jason Mantzoukas (Brooklyn Nine-Nine), Mae Whitman (Good Girls), Chris Diamantopoulos (Silicon Valley), Melise (The Flash), Kevin Michael Richardson (The Simpsons), Grey Griffin (Avengers Assemble), Max Burkholder (Imaginary Order) and many more. It’ll also feature a mini-Walking Dead reunion, thanks to Yeun starring and Lauren Cohan appearing in the series, as well.
