      Critics Consensus

On the whole, this Disney adaptation of the Sondheim classic sits comfortably at the corner of Hollywood and Broadway -- even if it darkens to its detriment in the final act.

Ezekiel M This movie is amazing with incredible songs! Rated 5 out of 5 stars 03/05/24 Full Review Koi P How have I not heard about this before? Well scripted, amazing cast, entertaining and fun! Rated 3.5 out of 5 stars 02/08/24 Full Review Lishan G As someone who grew up basically obsessed with the stage musical, I feel like this production was underappreciated. The casting was good to great, though Meryl Streep in particular had huge shoes to fill playing Bernadette Peters's role (I know, weird thing to say about Streep in particular); the cuts they made were mostly things that really wouldn't have translated well from the stage to the screen, like, the 'One Midnight Gone' summaries of what we'd seen so far, though cutting the Baker's father's song I disagree with; Agony might actually have been funnier than the original Broadway cast version. As in many musicals of the era, it feels visually grey and gritty, which I don't agree with particularly for the brighter first half of the movie, but other than that, they did a pretty good job adapting a really challenging show. Rated 4 out of 5 stars 01/23/24 Full Review Timothy D This Disney attemt at dark commedy is too overstuffed to hit home. The Gothic styling is nice and moments are good, but in the end, Into the Woods feels like more of a mess than anything. Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 02/26/24 Full Review Nate G This was the worst movie I've ever seen, not an exaggeration. The only time I remember leaving a theater in a genuinely bad mood because of how terrible the film was. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 12/27/23 Full Review Alec B Yes, its a little too rushed in the second half and very Disneyfied overall. But the good elements (like Emily Blunt, Anna Kendrick, the hilarious rendition of "Agony") do somewhat outweigh the bad. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 12/13/23 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating

Sarah Marshall Bitch Media When the story's consequences are just a little less dire and the darkness of the woods just a little less threatening, the hard-won redemption at story's end doesn't seem nearly as sweet. Jan 22, 2021 Full Review Candice Frederick Reel Talk Online ... somewhere along each character's traipse through the foreboding forest, the story just loses its way. Rated: C- Sep 1, 2017 Full Review Jason Bailey Flavorwire It's not, in any easily describable way at least, a terrible movie. It's just a woefully forgettable one, staged with all the depth and flair of a halfhearted community theater production. Jun 7, 2016 Full Review Jerry Cunningham OUT FRONT Magazine (Denver) Cinderella’s Prince Charming and Rapunzel’s Prince are played by Chris Pine and Billy Magnussen, both handsome, shallow, stylish, self-absorbed, chivalrous, and chauvinistic pigs -- I loved them. May 9, 2023 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review The film version doesn’t feel as playful or revisionist as the stage musical. Rated: 2.5/4 Jul 16, 2022 Full Review Richard Crouse Richard Crouse Survives the script meddling through strong staging, good performances and sheer wish fulfillment to make end up at it's own kind of happily ever after.
