The casting was good to great, though Meryl Streep in particular had huge shoes to fill playing Bernadette Peters's role (I know, weird thing to say about Streep in particular); the cuts they made were mostly things that really wouldn't have translated well from the stage to the screen, like, the 'One Midnight Gone' summaries of what we'd seen so far, though cutting the Baker's father's song I disagree with; Agony might actually have been funnier than the original Broadway cast version. As in many musicals of the era, it feels visually grey and gritty, which I don't agree with particularly for the brighter first half of the movie, but other than that, they did a pretty good job adapting a really challenging show. The Gothic styling is nice and moments are good, but in the end, Into the Woods feels like more of a mess than anything.
