The Princess of Wales heartbreakingly revealed how she explained her cancer treatment to her young children.
Kate, 42, is undergoing a course of preventative chemotherapy after post-operative tests following her abdominal surgery in January found traces of cancer. The future queen shared in her emotional and heartfelt televised statement to the world on Friday, March 22, that the difficult news came as a 'huge shock'.
The Princess has taken time out of the public eye over the last few months to recover from her major operation. Kate and Prince William have also prioritised time to gently break the news to their children, Prince George, 10, Princess Charlotte, 8, and Prince Louis, 5, as the mother-of-three reassured them: "I am going to be ok."
In her official statement, Kate said: "As you can imagine, this has taken time. It has taken me time to recover from major surgery in order to start my treatment. But, most importantly, it has taken us time to explain everything to George, Charlotte and Louis in a way that is appropriate for them, and to reassure them that I am going to be ok."
The Princess continued: "As I have said to them; I am well and getting stronger every day by focusing on the things that will help me heal; in my mind, body and spirits. Having William by my side is a great source of comfort and reassurance too. As is the love, support and kindness that has been shown by so many of you. It means so much to us both."
Kate asked for the public and media to respect her family's privacy as she navigates her road to recovery. She added: "We hope that you will understand that, as a family, we now need some time, space and privacy while I complete my treatment. My work has always brought me a deep sense of joy and I look forward to being back when I am able, but for now I must focus on making a full recovery."
The Princess also took the opportunity to thank the public for their 'wonderful messages and support' and credited her 'fantastic medical team'. She finished with: "At this time, I am also thinking of all those whose lives have been affected by cancer. For everyone facing this disease, in whatever form, please do not lose faith or hope. You are not alone."
Later that day, King Charles shared his pride in Kate. Buckingham Palace said he is 'so proud of Catherine for her courage in speaking as she did' and has 'remained in the closest contact with his beloved daughter-in-law throughout the past weeks'. The palace added both Their Majesties 'will continue to offer their love and support to the whole family through this difficult time'.
Asked when the public would be told more about the Princess' condition, Kensington Palace said: "Their Royal Highnesses understand the interest this update will generate and are grateful for the public support they have received throughout this period. Kensington Palace will provide information, when the time is right, and The Princess is able to restart work and her duties. In the meantime, we would ask that the family's privacy is respected."
