Besides being great exercise and a challenging sport, swimming is a life skill. The Y offers swim lessons of all kinds for all ages—family swim, competitive swim teams, and many types of adaptive-swim programs for kids and adults with special needs. We want everybody to be safe while they enjoy the pleasures of being around and in the water.

Ages 6 Months to 3 Years

Can the student respond to verbal cues and jump on land? If yes, move onto next question.

Introduces babies and toddlers to the water environment.

Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.

Is the student comfortable working with an instructor without a parent in the water? If yes, move onto next question.

Focuses on exploring body positions, blowing bubbles and fundamental safety and aquatic skills.

Accompanied by a parent, infants and toddlers learn to be comfortable in the water and develop swim readiness skills through fun and confidence-building experiences, while parents learn about water safety, drowning prevention, and the importance of supervision.

Ages 3 Years to 5 Years

Will the student go under water voluntarily? If yes, move onto next question.

Increases comfort around the water and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance.

Can the student do a front and back float on his or her own? If yes, move onto next question.

Encourages forward movement in water and basic self-rescue skills performed independently.

Can the student swim 10-15 yards on his or her front and back? If yes, move onto next question.

Develops intermediate self-rescue skills performed at longer distances than in previous stages.

Can the student swim 15 yards of front and back crawl? If yes, move onto next question.

Works on enhancing endurance and strokes, while reinforcing water safety through treading water.

Ages 5 Years to 12 Years

Will the student go under water voluntarily? If yes, move onto next question.

Increases comfort with underwater exploration and introduces basic self-rescue skills performed with assistance.

Can the student do a front and back float on his or her own?  If yes, move onto next question.

Introduces basic stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and basic self-rescue skills performed independently.

Can the student swim 10-15 yards on his or her front and back?  If yes, move onto next question.

Introduces breaststroke and reinforces water safety through treading water.

Can the student swim 15 yards of front and back crawl? If yes, move onto next question.

Enhances stroke technique in front crawl and back crawl and reinforces water safety through treading water and elementary backstroke.

Can the student swim front crawl, back crawl and breaststroke across the pool? If yes, move onto next question.

Introduces butterfly and reinforces water safety through treading water and sidestroke.

Can the student swim front crawl, back crawl, and breaststroke across the pool and back? If yes, move onto next level.

Refines stroke technique on all major competitive strokes and encourages swimming as part of a healthy lifestyle.

Ages 12+ Years

Develop competitive swimming strokes and techniques without the competition. Perfect for anyone that wants to try out for the team.

Whether overcoming fear of the water or refining your swim stroke skills for better fitness, it’s never too late to enjoy the fun and health benefits of swimming. In teen/adult swim lessons for ages 13 and older, instructors tailor each class to meet student abilities and goals. Each swim lesson session consists of eight 30-minute lessons. A low student-teacher ratio allows participants to safely develop skills and confidence in the water.

Private Swim Lessons

Private and Semi-Private swim lessons are for individuals who want one on one or small group instruction from a swim lesson instructor.

Complete a “Private/Semi-Private Swim Lesson Request” at our Welcome Center and your instructor will contact you to schedule your lesson. Lessons are sold in packages of four 30-minute lessons.
