India Box Office: ‘Bade Miyan Chote Miyan’ Crosses $11 Million

Following

Indian stars Akshay Kumar and Tiger Shroff teamed up for their new film Bade Miyan Chote Miyan and the movie has made a decent collection of $11.8 million in its first weekend. It was a four-day extended weekend as the movie released on April 11, on the occasion of Eid. Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan features Sonakshi Sinha, Alaya F, Manushi Chhillar and Prithviraj Sukumaran in important roles.

After making an opening gross collection of $4.3 million worldwide, the film saw an upward trend over the weekend. By the end of the second day - a working day in India - global collections for Bade Miyan Chote Miyan stood at $6.5 million.

In India, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan scored nearly $2 million opening before dipping down to almost $850,000 on the second day, Friday. The collections rose slightly to $1 million each on Saturday and Sunday taking the weekend total to nearly $5 million in India.

Directed by Ali Abbas Zafar Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is about the chest-thumping patriotism, heroics and bravery of the lead characters Freddie and Rocky played by Kumar and Shroff respectively.

Bade Miyan Chote Miyan is a typical entertainer that does not even try to appear rational or realistic. Predictably, the film lacks in depth of characters and integrity of the story. For example, two Indian soldiers carrying out a secret mission in a foreign land do not communicate via the earpieces they have but prefer shouting out loud. Their gunshots are also never noticed by anyone unless they want it to be so. The secret operation throws many such situations when you begin questioning the expertise of these special officers beyond the action that they excel at.

If over-the-top action suits your taste, the film will be a fun watch. The carefree attitude that Kumar displays may remind you of his hit comic franchises such as Housefull. He also shares an interesting camaraderie with Shroff and the duo make fit the world Zafar builds for them in Bade Miyan Chote Miyan.

Despite bad reviews, Bade Miyan Chote Miyan has earned better than the other Hindi release this week (Maidaan). However, the ambitious project has not lived up to trade expectations. With a wide release over 3000 screens in India and nearly 2000 more outside India, and the A-listers headlining Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, the film should have crossed the mark of $5 million on the opening day itself.

Directed by Amit R Sharma, Maidaan made an average opening of $1.2 million but registered a significant rise in the earnings over the weekend. Even with less publicity and fewer shows compared to Bade Miyan Chote Miyan, the sports drama managed to earn $3.8 million worldwide over the four-day extended weekend marking the festival of Eid. Maidaan is based on the real-life Indian football coach Syed Abdul Rahim and features Ajay Devgn in the lead role.

Meanwhile, Indian origin British actor Dev Patel has made an impressive start at the box office with his directorial debut Monkey Man. The film is ranked sixth on Comscore’s SCOR list of top scoring movies in the US over the weekend ending April 14. It scored $4 million in the US. The film features Patel alongside Sikander Kher, Sharlto Copley, Pitobash Tripathy, Vipin Sharna, Makarand Deshpande, Shobhita Dhulipala and Ashwini Kaleskar; and is likely to release in Indian theatres soon.
