El infinitivo (infinitive) es una de las formas no personales que pueden tomar los verbos en inglés. Se parece mucho a la forma básica (base form). La diferencia es que el infinitivo siempre incluye la palabra to, mientras que la forma básica nunca la incluye.

La mayoría del tiempo, el infinitivo y la forma básica de un verbo en inglés tienen la misma traducción en español. En la tabla siguiente, hay algunos ejemplos del infinitivo y de la forma básica de los verbos en inglés.

Infinitive vs. base form

El infinitivo y la forma básica no son intercambiables. De hecho, un error cometido frecuentemente por muchos aprendices del inglés es usar el infinitivo cuando se debe usar la forma básica, y vice versa.

Hay varios grupos de verbos que toman el infinitivo como complemento. Por ejemplo, los verbos de deseo, como to like(gustar), to love(amar) to need(necesitar) y to want(querer), siempre usan el infinitivo y no la forma básica.

Los verbos de la lista anterior no pueden tomar la forma básica; deben tomar como complemento el infinitivo. Parece una diferencia muy pequeña, pero la omisión de ese toresulta en una oración no gramatical y es, sin duda, algo que le suena mal a cualquier hablante nativo del inglés.
