Training to be an Officer
Royal Military Academy Sandhurst
There are three intakes each year for potential regular officers, in January, May and September. The commissioning course lasts for 42 weeks.
Army Officers are people who have ambitious goals. Whatever your background when you arrive you'll all go on to have one thing in common: you will all receive the best leadership and management training in the world at Sandhurst.
What happens at Sandhurst
- Term 1Junior Term (14 weeks)
You'll learn the basic military skills and by the end you'll have a solid grounding in the fundamentals of military leadership. There are three key exercises in Junior Term which focus on fieldcraft and tactics.
After this term you'll spend one week on Adventurous Training earning an Adventurous Training Qualification. This could be caving, skiing, paragliding, diving, sailing, mountaineering or canoeing.
- Term 2Intermediate Term (14 weeks)
This is the term when your focus changes. You will transition from only looking after yourself to being responsible for others.
Again, there are three exercises which focus on how you operate up to company level.
Once you've finished this term, you'll head off on a one week adventurous training exercise.
- Term 3Senior Term (14 weeks)
The final term sees you given more responsibility and you'll be expected to deal with increasingly complex scenarios, as your skills are further refined ready for commissioning.
You'll go on three more field exercises (including one overseas), before commissioning as an Officer in front of your friends and family.
Exercise Dynamic Victory
At the end of your course you'll have the chance to put everything you've learnt to the test on this two week exercise. On successfully passing the task you'll have earnt the right to wear your regimental head-dress for the first time.
