I absolutely love retro computer games, and this is definitely one of the best ones out there. I love history too, so it's right up my alley. It's very historically accurate, and actually pretty challenging. But I've made it to the end of the game 4 times. However, one issue I'm noticing is the music that plays at landmarks seems to get more and more distorted and broken every playthrough. I don't know if it's my computer, or if it's just the code, but before, the audio worked fine and dandy. Other than that, a very good game, and it got me into playing the many other MS-DOS game archives on this website.

Soooo, it was pretty stressful and I literally had to trade a set of clothes for bullets to get food because I was running low, and then couldn't get help from an Indian when I needed it because I had NO clothes left, but good thing is, everyone made it out alive. It felt great to finish with my family still living at the end. Great, stressful game if you like a good challenge! Was kinda close to make it to top ten, but didn't. (Still great game!) When you get to Soda Springs there is a way to get free supplies. There is a Wal-Mart a block away. The security cameras are not invented yet and the security guard takes his lunch at noon everyday. If Jamal is the manager that day he'll hook you up with supplies if you give him a handy.

I used to play Oregon Trail on an Apple.
For those who actually do know what I am talking about, this tells my age somewhat.
I did very well at it back then, and I have recently played on a DOS box with the same level of success, despite the game's inadvertent hostile imbalance against the user.
This version's hunting feature is entirely unusable.
The wagon sinks ANY time it is caulked.
Hurrying early on in the game to make up time for later rest needs is pointless because you can't get enough food no matter what you do.
All I can tell you is that this is most definitely NOT the Oregon Trail of the 1980s and early 1990s, and the modifications made to it are NOT sensible or game-enhancing.
Terrible job, guys.
You broke it.

*EDIT: This game is interesting, and it has a good story line. However, when your whole party dies, it does not tell you what you can do next, and when clicking "End Game," it brings you to an empty page where nothing happens, and you cannot go back into the game. One more thing is the number of letters for a name. I think it is too less and there should be more space for a full name.

I like how it accurately tells the story of the Oregon Trail and how it lets you choose your own adventure. It is fun and lets you know what the people during the Oregon Trail felt like and what they did to survive.

Subject: My strategies to get higher score:

Rest a lot - I always keep the health to "good" the entire trip. Whenever it drops to "fair", rest 3-9 days or attempt to trade 3-9 times to get it back up. Sometimes you will need to rest more than you walk, when "Bad water" and "Very little water" messages are spammed. If low on food, then buy more or go hunting.
Start early - Get to the finish before mid-January, because the health randomly drops to "poor" when you rest. I usually start in March and April. (Early blizzards don't really matter for me)
Supplies - I always always keep food rations to "filling" and pace to "steady" to keep health up. Always check and make sure you have enough supplies.

Even thought this game is over 30 years old now, it's still good. This is one of those games where I just want to chill. This Oregon Trail is more challenging because you waste days and food a lot, but that's ok. This game is well made. Pro tip: Get a lot of bullets to hunt for food. Leave early so you won't need to buy clothes and you can hunt a lot and trade good stuff like clothes for pounds of food that you can easily hunt extremely cheap if you have good aim. Realistically speaking irl I wouldn't be out in the wild for 2 years to get stacked to survive in the Oregon Trail.

Use a computer or have a Bluetooth keyboard set up to your phone/ tablet i have played it on all options and it does work you just need to use the numerical numbers on keyboard and enter to choose selection.

Even though I was born much later than the release of this game, I am still able to enjoy it like people did when it was new. Game has aged very well in my opinion, though I've always loved pixel art and music from older games so perhaps that influences it.
The game is still very challenging, which is probably why it's so good. You could be on your way to Oregon City from Fort Boise and the game decided your food must be lost in a wagon fire. This game is a wonderful piece of art/

Subject: Great Game

Awesome game! Challenging but a great one, especially considering I'm 13 years younger than the game.
1st successful try: went as a banker, lost 2 people
2nd successful try: went as a carpenter, lost 1 person randomly (no health problems), got 7th place

Here are a few tips for those struggling:
-Go as a banker the first time you play. Even though your score won't be the best, it'll be a little easier considering you get $1600 to start off with.
-I recommend not buying more than 1000 lbs of food when you first leave Independence, Missouri. If you feel that it is necessary, hire a ferry. Don't caulk the wagon if you have more than 6 oxen and/or 900 lbs of food.
-Buy some ammo before you leave. 3 or more boxes should last you. If you happen to find an abandoned wagon, you are likely to get more and you can buy more bullets at the forts.
-Should someone in your party get sick, feed your people the maximum amount of food (Filling) and go hunting a couple of times. Once your health gets back up to Fair, set the food back to whatever you were originally feeding them and keep going. Bad water and little water will hurt your health; if your health is Poor, do the same thing once you get to a good area.
-If you get to Snake River, have extra clothing to trade to the Shoshoni Indians so they can guide you across the river. Do not caulk the wagon without a guide.
-At the first fork in the road, take the route to Fort Bridger. Even though it will eat time, you have low chances of making it across the Green River (I drowned everybody on that river and gave up the very first time). Plus, you can buy more supplies at the fort.
-Keep a steady pace. Do not go too much faster unless you're falling behind; even then, don't go at Grueling speed. Stay at strenuous and slow down the first time that someone gets sick or you hit a rough trail.
-Leave in April. That way you have some extra time to get to Oregon. Do not leave later than May.
-Try to get to Independence Rock by July 4th. In real life, if you didn't make it to Independence Rock before Jul. 4th you likely wouldn't make it to Oregon before winter.
-When hunting, don't waste bullets. Don't shoot at squirrels and rabbits. Once you get 2 deer/1 bear/1 buffalo, stop. You can only carry 100 lbs of meat back to the wagon.
-If you happen to kill everyone on the way, don't write anything inappropriate on your headstone. Kids play this game too.

Subject: Oldie but Goodie!

This is an old game but a good one at that. I used to play this game when I was little at home. It has managerial/sim elements to it that I love. The premise of the game is that you have to go to Oregon and try not to die getting there lol! I usually manage to get halfway there and then I die lol! You have to buy enough supplies to get to the end of the game without getting any kind of weird disease. Overall, I would rate this game 5 stars because it has good educational elements to it and is a good teaching tool for a lesson about the pioneers.

For how simple it is, its extraordinarily fun. Buying different combinations of items and trying to squeak it out to Willamette, figuring out what pace and what amount of rations would be good for the situation, thinking of a strategy that'll get you to the end. Or, trying your hand at speed running it. Figuring out the perfect route that will get you to the end as fast as possible. For how minimalistic and basic it is, it has a ton of possibilities and potential for fun. But the luck aspect of it is complete bullshit. You could be crushing it and oh look at that lose ten days, you just recover from the ten days and well shit the wagon is on fire. Whats that? The thief equivalent of James motherfucking Bond just stole all of your ox, sucks to suck. Have to hope there is someone willing to trade something reasonable for an ox. You try to trade and either no one wants to or they are asking for something like 550 pounds of food for a single fucking wagon wheel. Still pretty fun though.

I got mad about being second place. Sorry about that. It's a good game though. I'd recommend investing in bullets and hunting often. When hunting, only shoot deer, bears, and bison, and only when you know you will hit (don't waste bullets). Once you've shot 2 deer/ 1 bear/ 1 bison, don't shoot. You can only get 100 pounds of meat per hunt. Also, hunting and attempting to trade, take 1 day. Have a great day!

I'm reading a book call The Oregon Trail: A New American Journey by Rinker Buck. He has such great insight about the trail and the hazards. He talks about the use of the mules and that the wagons were only 36 square feet. I really have an appreciation for those who crossed the trail to build a better life and a better America.

I hope the makers of this game partner with one of the large game makers to bring this game into today's technology and a great teaching tool.

I love this game, especially considering the fact that I, someone growing up in the digital age, can sit through a game this old and not get bored just seems like a miracle to me. This game is thoroughly exciting because it has every element of fun that kids these days want to see, such as getting to name and semi-create their own characters, making decisions, such as when to buy food or new wagon wheels, or new oxen because your oxen either ran away or got stolen. It also forces you to think about the decisions you make first. For example, becoming a carpenter means that you are more capable of fixing things than say a doctor, who is just as important because they can heal people. All in all, I was thoroughly impressed by this game!

Just made it to Oregon on my first ever try of this game. However, three of my party died when I tried to ford the first river crossing of the journey. Michael broke his arm twice, got dysentry, got typhoid twice, but he made it through with one other. Made it into the top ten.

Might have to play it through again sometime to see the brutal difficulty I've heard about but didn't experience the first time through.
Well made game and definitely worth a play if only to see how a predominantly text based game can still be playable this day in age.

So I've been seen a lot of people writing, "I couldn't get the game to work!" Immediately assuming that the game is terrible and they leave a bad review and leave. All you really have to do is just reload the page a couple times and it should work fine. I've been playing this game every day for the past week and it works perfectly fine for me every time.

For those of you who can't get past the part after entering names, if you pressed the shift button, you are stuck in caps lock. Pressing numbers will make the game think you're entering the numbers with the shift buttons. If you do not press the shift button and enter your names in lowercase, the game runs fine.

Also shift works for me all the time and I'm on a school-issued chromebook so it works fine for me on chromebooks. I hope this helped you! :D

Subject: Clunky controls. Would prefer a download version.

It was fun, but it has a few issues. The first I noticed was that it wouldn't accept numerical input from the keyboard numpad, which was weird. The second was that, when hunting, it would occasionally "stick" on shooting. That is to say, it thinks the spacebar remains pressed down when it isn't, and fires continuously. That was really annoying, considering how important resources are to this game.

The most annoying part though was that when I went to leave this review, I didn't realize that unlike most sites it opens a new page - it doesn't have a box in the bottom hat expands, nor does a click open a new tab. No, it opened a new page. Why was this a problem? Well, I wasn't done playing! I just hit that stuck spacebar bug and wanted to mention it, but when I clicked back the entire game started over.

If this game was downloaded I could have saved the state of the dosbox or something to effectively save my game, but now I have to start over.

On the plus side, even though full screen mode disables the mouse, pressing alt-tab brings it back so I can use my other monitors while I play, although if I mute the audio to listen to music the music of a new place still plays.

I realize that these negatives are about user interface, rather than the functional elements of the game, but user interface is a big part of the player experience.

When you open the tab wait untill it stops loading, ( the blue circle on the tab stops spinning) then you click on the play button, it should work then.

Hi I am 11 years old. My aunt loves to play all the free games that she can, that she doesn't have to download on her own computer. One day I went over to her and said " What are you playing? " She said " I'm playing The Oregon Trail. It's about 5 people who went across the Oregon trail and you have choices in the game whether to hunt, to trade, you can talk to people. " I said " Cool, is there any way I could try that game" She said sure. Ever sense she let me try that game 4 years ago I have fell in love with it. I play it every chance I have. I come home from school make sure no one is on the computer look up archive.org and start playing this game. I really love this game. Keep making sure you make more games like this and you guys who haven't tried this game yet, should really try it. I just wanted also to thank my aunt for letting me play this game on her computer. Subject: You CAN Walk While Hunting

Love this game, I remember playing the original. I see a lot of people say they can't walk while hunting but all you need to do is use the Enter key (Use the one on your number pad on your keyboard if the other doesn't work) Hit once to start walking and once to stop, using the directional keys to navigate. It actually does say that in the pre-hunting screen where it tells you which arrows to use, at the top of the list, but it can be easy to skim over without actually reading. I hope this helps! ;)

Honestly, it was extremely fun. I started as a farmer (first time playing the game). Despite farmer having the least amount of money to spend, I was able to get second place in the highest ranking :). I was able to:
-Have 8 oxes
-Have 100 bullets left over
-Have 900 food left over
-All 5 members surviving
-6 sets of clothing
-2 wagon supplies (wheels, etc.)
-The wagon xD

I am surprised at my results though...Honestly never thought I would get a score of around 6400.

Had it easy the entire way until we got to Fort Bridger. No grass and bad water 100 miles both ways. People at the fort said the hunting was good but the bears were as fast as jackrabbits and nothing but squirrels crossed my path. The indians were all complaining about us white folk and my wagon mysteriously caught on fire as soon as I left. All my food and my bullets disappeared so it got rough for a while but somehow we made it. My entire family died on the Columbia but I made it across so 10/10.

Barely made it to fort boise. Mitchell had just died. Things went uphill from there. Made it to the Dalles safely. Decided to take a raft down the columbia. Got several warnings not to. Feeling lucky, disheeded them. Immediatly after starting, the raft hits a rock, the raft flips over, and everyone dies a slow and horrible death by drowning. Still get to right a epitaph, somehow

11/10 would drown in the columbia again

I heard about this game about three years ago. Among the reviews I read the words challenging, hard, merciless, and a must-play classic (among others) were the most popular words to describe this masterpiece so I finally decided to give it a try.

I played for an hour without too many issues, so I could not understand the challenging, merciless and hard part that many people talk about, you just have to heed the advices of the npc that talk to you and be a good hunter (by the way, I did not pay much attention to the first review in the list, kzm007 I think, who accurately said that you could move while hunting, as a result I ended up finding about it halfway through the game.

Finally in my last 50 miles to reach my final destination an ox got injured, three were stolen, one of my companions got his arm broken, one was bitten by a snake and another suffered from dysentery.

Other than these quirks (understandable with outmoded technologies), this is a fun experience, and much better know that I know how to save progress - no more all-night journeys for me.

Running ChromeOS on Acer Chromebook. This game also plays nicely hooked to an HDTV via HDMI.

It's 25 years old (a year younger than me), people - stop complaining about in-game purchases. The only purchases you get are with in-game money or trading goods. Apps didn't come about until mobile devices were created. Be grateful it's not a freemium game; that business model only serves the profits of the companies - enjoy this free of charge.

For those of you who can't get past the part after entering names, if you pressed the shift button, you are stuck in caps lock. Pressing numbers will make the game think you're entering the numbers with the shift buttons. If you do not press the shift button and enter your names in lowercase, the game runs fine.

However, I would like to know if there's a way to disable shift/caps lock, for those who want to use capital letters when naming. At least maybe offer a tutorial as to how MS-DOS works for newbies like me.

I may have played this game when it first came out, but it was so long ago, that I'm not sure that I finished it. Well now I have, twice.

For those interested in getting a high score, choose the farmer, make sure your group's health is good right before the end, not just fair, be patient and don't try to rush to the end, and use your gun to get most of your food. Buying food is dumb, you need that money for more important things like ferry fares and wagon parts.

Those with probs need to try Google Chrome. I found that the numbers switch from the top to the keypad at the start of the game (when it asks the month) and that if you start another game they reverse (top keys vs keypad). Not very hard to figure out. And all the directions you need are plainly written. Just read them. On the keypad, when hunting, the 7,9,1,3 buttons give you diagonal aiming and movement. Bullets seem the least critical of all supplies, btw, but get about 300 and you'll be fine. Unless you're a really lousy shot! ENJOY and good luck getting it to load. Oh, and you might read ALL the reviews to get some tips. Reading is FUNdaMENTAL!

Effing brilliant. And I mean that sincerely. This game is SO MUCH FUN. Unfortunately, I cannot complete my game MOST of time due to the game refusing input from the keyboard at random, requiring a refresh (google chrome.)

All in all, I am thankful for the game being available on archive.org, but PLEASE try and work out the buggy controls in chrome (no other browsers would even do more than black screen) and fix the leaderboards.

Subject: Can't Hunt?

For those of you below who can't find the hunt option, it appears when you hit the 'enter' key WHILE TRAVELING on the trail. Each hunt costs one day. The travel screen gives you clues about good hunt locales. Green grass is good. Yellow grass, bad water and poor graze areas are bad.

You can only carry 100 pounds of food back to your wagon per hunt so don't waste bullets for overkill (which also makes further hunts in the area more difficult). A deer has around 75 pounds of food. Smaller game like birds and squirrels are worth less and are harder to kill thus wasting bullets unless you are a crack shot.

Sadly, the biggest target and easiest kill is a buffalo. It's worth around 900 pounds of food so you must leave 800 pounds rotting in the sun. It's quite a guilt trip since several people you talk to lament all the buffalo killing going on. Heh, another history lesson from OT I suppose.

Ethics aside, hunting is obviously an essential skill for the higher levels.

I haven't had any trouble running the game. Took me a while to figure out < and > let you turn diagonal in hunting mode - not the number pad. Also, hitting enter makes your little guy walk so you can get to a better vantage point. For those who couldn't figure out how to hunt, just hit Enter at any point on the trail and it's option 8. I also thought the game was frozen, but I had somehow clicked off the screen - somewhere else on the page. When I clicked the game screen, there was a little blue border around it and I was back in the game! Another time I thought it froze, but for some unknown reason, all of a sudden my number pad worked but my regular keyboard numbers weren't registering any more. So I just started using the number pad. (This didn't work the first time it happened, but I think number lock was off.)

The game works for a while, then completely stops. Very frustrating to constantly have to start from the beginning.

I have not been able to make it thru the trail once without the game freezing - the furthest I've been able to go without the game freezing is the Blue Mountains. SO disappointing.

Subject: Missed this game!

I missed playing this game. Simple, but in it's own way, difficult and addictive.

I only wish the developers on here would find a way to adjust the controls for hunting. I don't have a number pad on my laptop, so I can only use the arrow keys, making it difficult to aim properly.

Subject: Finally got to play this game!

My wife has been telling me about this game for over a decade! How it was the best game ever (she isn't a gamer btw) and how they had so much fun playing this game... yada yada yada... and I have to say it isn't the best game ever but it is a ton of fun and having the chance to play it on my browser with zero issues! gives this a 5 star rating... I even posted it on my blog as well... hope it helps

Subject: How to control?

The game starts up (after disabling AdBlock) and i can easily cruise through the first several pages using the keyboard. But when it loads the screen asking when i want to leave, the numbers stop functioning. I can't get past that screen since i have to punch in a number to select what month to leave.

Anyone have any tips? I'm using Chrome 39.0.2171.95 m (the latest version) on a Lenovo X230 laptop on wireless.

I travelled 1500 miles then the last person in the group died. I didnt have to use any ammo but sickness and thieves robbing the groups clothes was a common issue the new settlers had.

I just finished playing a round of this classic childhood game and everything worked fine. I also realized that you can move while hunting... Which I never knew as a kid. Good game, glad it's available.
