Why is hotmail automatically deleting old messages in my inbox?

Hello
I appreciate this has been asked elsewhere, but I have followed all the advice and been unable to resolve this issue.

I have recently changed to Outlook hotmail.

I have noticed that after a period of time emails in my inbox are being automatically deleted. If I save them into a sub-folder this does not happen, but if they sit in my main Inbox, they disappear after about a week. Today (16 March) I have no emails older than 6 March in my main inbox folder. There are many emails I have not deleted - but they have gone.

I have attempted to restore the deleted inbox messages from the deleted folder and some have been retrieved this way. However, the fundamental problem remains that emails are automatically being deleted. This should not be happening. I do not have Sweep on - so there is no setting to automatically clean my inbox.

Please help. Why is this happening and how can I stop it?

Thank you.

Some phones only keep messages a week.  Are you also accessing the account with a phone?

Hello. I do use an iPhone app (mBox Mail) to access my email. This app only shows the most recent messages but shouldn't delete them. However, I occasionally use the Apple mail app when sending emails, so perhaps this is doing something. Will check the settings.
Thank you.

Hello again,

My emails are still being automatically deleted from my Hotmail account after 10 days (but only if they're in the main folder, not if they're in a subfolder). Is there any other advice you can suggest to stop this? I can find no setting on my phone that creates this problem, so I don't think it's my iPhone.

Adam

Not sure - I use an app called mBox Mail which automatically downloads all recent emails from my POP account but it does not delete emails from the server unless I delete them from the app.

Hello,

In response to your email, I checked the mail client that accesses my Hotmail and displays notifications on my laptop. It included a setting that deleted emails from the server after one month - so I have removed this option. Hopefully this should resolve the issue.

Thank you for your help.

Regards,

Adam

Hi royxie,

I understand that your emails are being moved to your deleted folder on their own.

There's one feature in Outlook.com that can cause this behavior. It's called Schedule cleanup. You may have activated this feature in the past. What it does is it moves email messages from certain senders to certain folders. The frequency of the clean up depends on how it was set by the user.

To know more about this feature, please see this link.

To keep a message from being cleaned up, select the message, click Categories and choose Important.

Thank you.
