Sometimes a summer film just needs a cast of familiar voices, especially if they get to play monsters. The Hotel Transylvania series has a huge roster of comedy stars riffing on the greatest monsters in movie history. The whole cast is back, with a few new additions, for Hotel Transylvania 3: Summer Vacation, opening July 13.
This third movie takes place a couple of months after the events of the previous film. Dracula is a bit down in the dumps because he’s lonely. In an attempt to cheer the vampire up, Dracula’s close friends suggest that they all go on a cruise. Their luxury Monster Cruise Ship isn’t as friendly as it looks, however, and the villainous captain Ericka might wipe out all the monsters once and for all.
Hotel Transylvania: Summer Vacation promises to be one of this year’s most hilarious films, so let’s get to know the cast a little better.
Adam Sandler
Adam Sandler voices Dracula once again, after having given life to the surprisingly tender bloodsucker in the previous two Hotel Transylvania movies. This time, Dracula is lonely and hopes for some company as the family takes a break from Transylvania.
Sandler became famous thanks to a stint on SNL, then developed his comic voice on the big screen in films such as Billy Madison, The Wedding Singer and Happy Gilmore.
Selena Gomez
Mavis, voiced by Selena Gomez, is Dracula’s daughter, and the monster most significantly responsible for bringing her father’s business into the modern world. She’s now 126, and ready to come into her own as a leader, both of her family and for monsters in general.
Selena Gomez is one of the world’s biggest singers, but she’s also had multiple movie roles, including Another Cinderella Story, Princess Protection Program and Monte Carlo. She also serves as executive producer of Netflix series 13 Reasons Why.
Andy Samberg
Andy Samberg is the human heart of the Hotel Transylvania franchise, as he voices Jonathan ‘Johnny’ Loughran, the regular guy who captured Mavis’s heart in the first movie and became a father to her half-vampire child in the second.
Samberg also got his start on SNL, and acts as one third of the Lonely Island musical/comedy group. He’s led movies such as Hot Rod, and Popstar: Never Stop Never Stopping, and is currently best known for his work on the hit series Brooklyn Nine-Nine, a role he has played since 2013.
Kevin James
Kevin James is back as Frankenstein (Frank to his friends). James’s version of the classic monster, who we saw in the first two films, looks grotesque but has a heart of gold. Arguably best known for his leading role on CBS sitcom on The King of Queens, James has also starred in quite a few movies, including Paul Blart: Mall Cop, Grown Ups, Zookeeper and Hitch.
David Spade
David Spade is an American actor and stand-up comedian and, much like Sandler and Samberg, he rose to fame on Saturday Night Live. He has starred in films such as Tommy Boy, Black Sheep and Grown Ups. In the Hotel Transylvania franchise, Spade voices Griffin, the Invisible Man, and he’ll be a little easier to spot in Sumer Vacation thanks to his holiday attire.
Steve Buscemi
Legendary character actor Steve Buscemi reprises his role as Wayne the werewolf, who is comically overwhelmed by the amazing number of children he has. Buscemi needs little introduction, having featured in films such as Reservoir Dogs, Armageddon, and Parting Glances. He’s also known for his work in television, especially for his leading role on HBO series Boardwalk Empire.
Keegan Michael-Key
Keegan Michael-Key is a core member of the monster crowd as he brings Murray the Mummy to life. He’s back after an introduction in the second film. The actor is no stranger to voice work, having lent his voice to films such as The Lego Movie and The Angry Birds Movie. Hotel Transylvania: Summer Vacation isn’t the only big film Keegan Michael-Key has coming out this year, as he plays a pivotal role in the upcoming Predator.
Molly Shannon
Molly Shannon is also back as Wanda, who is married to Wayne the Werewolf. Like many of the stars of Hotel Transylvania, Shannon was previously a cast member of Saturday Night Live. She has appeared in plenty of films too, including How The Grinch Stole Christmas, A Night at the Roxbury and My Boss’s Daughter. She has also frequently appeared on TV, with guest roles on Twin Peaks, Seinfeld, and Sex and the City. She currently stars in HBO series Divorce.
Fran Drescher
Fran Drescher once again gets to enjoy a plum part as Eunice, the bride of Frankenstein. In addition to her work in two previous films in this animated franchise, Drescher is celebrated for playing Fran Fine in ’90s sitcom The Nanny. She made her Broadway debut in 2014, portraying stepmother Madame in Cinderella.
Kathryn Hahn
Hotel Transylvania newcomer Kathryn Hahn voices Ericka Van Helsing, the captain of the luxury Monster Cruise Ship. Fans of Dracula will realize her name is a bad sign, as the Van Helsing clan has always hunted vampires. Indeed, Ericka continues the work of her grandfather, and is bent of eliminating all monsters. Hahn began her career on long-running TV drama Crossing Jordan, and went on to appear in movies including Afternoon Delight, Bad Moms and Revolutionary Road. She currently stars in Amazon series Transparent.
Hotel Transylvania: Summer Vacation hits theaters on July 13, 2018.
