John Cusack has claimed on twitter that he wasn't even approached about doing the movie.. which I find a bit puzzling....

Edit: https://twitter.com/johncusack/status/565060345929428992

One of the tweets just to be thorough

u/tossin avatar

According to Wikipedia, the budget for the first one was $36M and $14M for this one. I bet a good chunk of the difference comes from not having to pay John Cusack.

u/adsflkjadsf avatar

Holy shit they did a Hollywood sequel for less money? And that little?

Damn in the next 10 years every other movie will have a sequel.

Maybe they'll even just make 3 or 4 movies off the bat and release them on an interva... oh wait, they've already done that a few times.

They also halved their audience each time as well.

I'm joking. I don't know if they did or not.

If it wasn't for Adam Sandler and his Happy Madison Production Company, Kevin James would've been out of the movie business long ago.

Seems like they halved the budget

Same highway Killed off half the cast

Percy Jackson #1: $95M budget

Percy Jackson #2: $90M budget, and arguably a better movie with higher production value.

I wonder how much they saved solely on swapping out Pierce Brosnan for Anthony Head.

Also: Yes, internet, Alexandra Daddario is in it.

Much of this can be attributed to the changes in Hollywood over the last 5 years. Countries like Canada have had massive increases in the visual effects industry in recent years in order to capitalize on the previously American-only market. In order to get business, these companies have relied on huge government subsidies to compete. The result at this point is that visual effects are being mostly exported because the foreign prices are substantially lower than domestic. Many previously large American FX companies have gone bankrupt because of these subsidies, but the costs for the studios are way down. As a result, effects-heavy sequels like Percy Jackson can have smaller budgets than their originals. I did a pretty big research paper about a year ago on Oscar night, and there was a big protest going on trying to create American subsidies or get the studios to stop going foreign or something.

Every funny movie needs a "straight man" to keep us grounded. HTTM2 might just be too ridiculous.

I thought Adam Scott usually plays the straight man. He does in Party Down and Parks and Rec

While I agree that that is his character on Parks and Rec, he hasn't always done that in movies, mainly looking at Step Brothers

more replies More replies

I guess Adam Scott comes at a significantly cheaper price than John Cusack? Which seems a bit odd since I would think Adam Scott is the hotter commodity at the moment

seems like a good plan...Last one grossed almost $64mil at the box office on a $36mil budget, let's slash the budget for the sequel by more than half.

Wait no

Fuck, why even bother making it if you're going to half-ass it like that?

u/tossin avatar

If whoever greenlighted the film think they can make a profit, they probably don't really care. $14M is like nothing these days for a non-independent film venture. If the film does half as well as the original, it'll still make the same amount of profit ($28M).

He was apparently an asshole on the set of Hot Tub Time Machine one. He thought he was better than the project and was pissed off he was even there.

u/TheMday avatar

Source? I believe you I just wanna read more about it.

u/BIack avatar
Edited

The ama he did last year would suggest that he didn't exactly enjoy the experience.

What was your favorite moment of filming Hot Tub Time Machine?

Finishing the cut in the studio alone with my producing partner...Fighting and winning and getting all the things in the film that the audiences liked -- and being 100% right...

Edit: He answered a few more questions about HTTM and said he'd be game for a 3rd movie "depending on a few things" and he mentions a TV version wants to do/they are developing?

u/Goddamn_Batman avatar

It's annoying that he might be right, HTTM 1 got 63% on rotten tomatoes, pretty respectably high for a comedy. HTTM 2 is sitting at 13%. Woof!

more replies More replies
u/RushSawyer avatar

Sounds like he had a problem with the higher-ups wanting to make cuts/changes rather than anyone on set

[deleted]
[deleted]

This really implies that he was fighting with the studio and not the other actors or the director. The fact that he was devoting time and energy at all indicates he didn't think he was "above" the film or he would have just let it go.

[deleted]
[deleted]

If he fought for the movie, that means he cared about it, I would assume.

I don't remember where I heard that, quick google search I could only find a diplomatic answer from Corddry about why he wasnt in the 2nd one.

http://jackontheweb.cbslocal.com/2014/10/03/rob-coddry-on-cusack-not-returning-for-hot-tub-time-machine-2-i-dont-think-it-was-his-cup-of-tea/

u/AMistress avatar

Billy and Rebekah then asked why John Cusack would not be returning for ‘Hot Tub Time Machine 2′. Rob responded, “He probably like woke up one day and he’s like, 'Aw crap that stupid movie is popular?'…He's a very serious actor and I don’t think it was his cup of tea.”

Not true at all. I was fortunate enough to work on the HTTM set & from first-hand experience my 3 days working beside the cast, John was nothing short of being polite, well-mannered & got along extremely well with the other cast mates. Even to the point between takes where they (the leads) would all find something that rhymes with HTTM, and make the other cast guess it aka - Craig would put his hands up as if trapped in a glass box, and Rob would yell out "MIME!" "Hot tub MIME MACHINE!"

As per the scene, I pushed a baggage trolley into John as he collapsed through it after being stabbed in the eye (cut); and though he didn't come up to me with a coffee & his arm extended to shake mine, that doesn't make him an asshole, it just makes him someone that's focused on doing their job. I've worked on plenty of other sets, with much smaller named actors who reek of attitude, but Cusack was surely not one of these cats.

PS. Steve Pink is a full fledged legend, so much respect for the guy.

ah well that would explain it then :)

u/DrScience2000 avatar

That'd be an interesting movie right there.

"Lunch Hour Bitch Fest" starring Chevy Chase and John Cusack

Plot Synopses: Two notoriously persnickety actors are forced to eat together at lunch. A bitch fest of hilarious proportions results as they make the waitress cry and the lives of everyone around them miserable.

Yeah John's been definitely tearing up the box office lately, just such a draw. Can totally imagine he would be pissed he starred in a delightfully underrated comedy.

u/RedAnarchist avatar

John doesn't usually do more than a movie or two a year anyways and out of his last 10, 5 were indy films that opened on ~20 screens.

Of the 5 that were major releases, they pulled in almost $400,000,000 in sales.

So yeah he does a'ite.

John: Hey man, any interesting roles for me?

Agent: Just another hot tub movie

J: Can I do my usual self-loathing-yet-sentimental music snob complaining about my ex girlfriends role?

A: Yes, however you probably won't be the absolute center of attention.

J: then gtfo I have records to listen to with my big headphones

I don't want to see the second for two reasons... no John Cusack even though the conflict between him and Rob was a big part of the original and it seems like the sequel jumps around to too many different time periods. Looks like a blatant cash grab.

u/bacchus213 avatar

From what I understand, Cusack's character wasn't in the original script for the first movie, but the studio executives said they had to have a recognizable name attached to it before they would green light. His character, and the whole love interest with the girl from Spin magazine were added in order to make the money men happy. Or, I could be making all of that up.

u/Stumblin_McBumblin avatar

He was the straight man in a buddy group comedy. That's, like, a pretty standard element in those types of movies. Not sure if Hollywood requires that or not.

Though, now that I think about it, one of the funnier elements of The Hangover is that they lose that character immediately and he isn't in the majority of the movie.

Cooper's character was a con-artist...defrauding his students out of field trip money to fund his portion of the trip, and always trying to charm his way out of situations.

Ed Helm's character seems "straighter" as the loser whose pathetic life is fixed by joining his crazy partners on the adventure.

The straight man is kind of a requirement of most comedies that involve more than one person and aren't situationally based.

It keeps things grounded, and the straight man is useful for setting stuff up. This isn't even limited to western stuff either: Japanese and Chinese comedies use the straight man too.

The straight man is also supposed to be the audience proxy.

I wish it would've been called that. Of course I'd be confused, but it would've been so funny.

Especially when there are movies that you didnt even know had a sequel but you hear about the third one. Starship Troopers 3 is a great example.

I would of loved to hear the jokes they went on about over the second film that doesn't exist... Didn't another movie do this? It's at the tip of my tongue but I can't remember.

"Spaceballs III: The Search for Spaceballs II"

Actually, there is a Thankskilling 3 where the plot legitimately involves searching for Thankskilling 2.

No no, there was a movie that actually did it to the result that people actually made up the actual sequel. But that is a good example that I thought of

The TV show the Venture Bros. did that with an episode about a time machine.

Escape to the House of Mummies Part II

There is no part I and the episode ends with a "next time on the Venture Bros." where the episode continues into part III, but it doesn't exist.

"Once Upon a Time In Mexico" is a more serious example. The series is as follows:

  1. Mariachi

  2. Desperado

  3. ???

  4. Once Upon a Time in Mexico

From Rodriguez:

"This is really part four," he says with a smile. "We ended up skipping part three altogether. It's a very strange movie, like waking up after drinking too much tequila and going "Where am I?"
