2019 Honda HR-V Overview

Is the 2019 Honda HR-V a Good Used SUV?

Yes, the 2019 HR-V is a great used subcompact SUV . It has a huge cargo hold for a small SUV, and Honda’s rear Magic Seat provides extra versatility because it can fold in several ways, allowing you to carry cargo of different shapes and sizes. On top of that, the rear seats are expansive, and this Honda has a gentle ride and great fuel economy estimates. However, the HR-V’s front seats can feel confining, and it has a subpar predicted reliability rating. This vehicle’s engine also fails to impress.

The 2019 Subaru Crosstrek has more cargo room behind the rear seats, and it has superior off-road abilities. If you want something with a ton of standard driver assistance features, consider the 2019 Toyota C-HR .

Which Used Honda HR-V Trim Is Right for Me?

The 2019 Honda HR-V comes in five trim levels: LX, Sport, EX, EX-L, and Touring. All five models have the same engine and transmission. All-wheel drive is standard in the Touring and available in all other trims.

Most shoppers will want to upgrade to the Sport trim to get tech features such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto. Shoppers after more safety add-ons may want to consider the EX model.

  • Honda HR-V LX: The base LX trim level comes with a 5-inch infotainment display, a USB port, Bluetooth, a four-speaker stereo, Honda’s Magic Seat, alloy wheels, and a rearview camera.
  • Honda HR-V Sport: The Honda HR-V Sport builds off of the LX and adds a 7-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a second USB port, a six-speaker stereo, a leather-wrapped steering wheel, and fog lights. The Sport is also the only trim with larger alloy wheels.
  • Honda HR-V EX: The EX trim gains the Honda Sensing suite of driver assistance features, which includes forward collision warning, a collision mitigation braking system, road departure mitigation, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, and adaptive cruise control. Also included in the EX are the Honda LaneWatch blind spot camera, proximity keyless entry, automatic climate control, heated front seats, satellite radio, HD Radio, and a moonroof. Notably, the EX loses the leather-wrapped steering wheel.
  • Honda HR-V EX-L: EX-L models regain the leather-wrapped steering wheel and add leather-trimmed seats.
  • Honda HR-V Touring: The range-topping Touring trim builds off of the EX-L with a satellite-linked navigation system, an eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat, remote start, and standard all-wheel drive.

What Does Honda's Certified Pre-Owned Warranty Cover?

Honda offers two levels of certification for its certified pre-owned vehicles: HondaTrue Certified and HondaTrue Certified+. Both levels come with a seven-year/100,000-mile powertrain warranty, roadside assistance, up to two oil changes within the first year of ownership and a 90-day satellite radio trial subscription.

The vehicle’s model year determines which program and repair coverage it qualifies for. HondaTrue Certified covers vehicles from the 2018 through 2023 model years and with fewer than 80,000 miles. For vehicles still under the new-car warranty, Honda extends coverage to four years from the original sale date or 48,000 miles. For vehicles outside the new-car warranty, Honda offers a one-year/12,000-mile limited warranty. HondaTrue Certified+ is for 2022 and 2023 models with fewer than 12,000 miles. For these vehicles, Honda extends the new-car warranty to five years from the original sale date or 86,000 miles. Additional benefits may be available.

According to our analysis, Honda’s CPO program is one of the best among affordable carmakers, besting competitors such as Toyota, Hyundai, Chevy and Ford.

2019 Honda HR-V Versus the Competition

Which Is Better: 2019 Honda HR-V or 2019 Hyundai Kona?

The 2019 Hyundai Kona is one of the best used subcompact SUVs on the road. Not only does the Kona have a class-leading safety score, but it also has a strong turbocharged engine option, an all-electric powertrain option, dynamic handling, high-end cabin materials, lots of standard features, and an easy-to-use infotainment system. Throw in the Hyundai’s above-average predicted reliability rating, and it’s not hard to see why it’s the better vehicle.

Which Is Better: 2019 Honda HR-V or 2019 Honda CR-V?

The 2019 Honda CR-V is a compact SUV , and it has more cargo and passenger space than its sibling. The CR-V is also the better vehicle in several other areas. It has two stronger engine options, and, despite being a larger SUV, the CR-V with its turbocharged engine is just as fuel-efficient as the HR-V. Furthermore, the CR-V has more upscale cabin materials, and it has better safety and predicted reliability ratings.

2019 HR-V Performance

How Does the 2019 Honda HR-V Drive?

This vehicle rides gently over most surfaces, with all but the largest bumps being smoothed over. Responsive steering, strong brakes, and good maneuverability help this Honda feel composed on the road. It’s not as agile as the 2019 Mazda CX-3 , but it’s still fairly composed.

If the HR-V has any glaring weaknesses, its engine would be one of them. This is not a fast vehicle. Acceleration comes sluggishly, and the continuously variable automatic transmission doesn't do a good job delivering consistent power.

  • Engine: 2.4-liter four-cylinder with 141 horsepower and 127 pound-feet of torque
  • Drivetrain: standard front-wheel drive; available all-wheel drive
  • Transmission: continuously variable automatic (CVT)
Does the 2019 Honda HR-V Get Good Gas Mileage?

This Honda gets EPA estimates of 28 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway with front-wheel drive. Adding all-wheel drive reduces those numbers to 26 and 31 mpg, respectively. Those are phenomenal fuel economy ratings for a small SUV.

2019 HR-V Interior

How Many People Does the 2019 HR-V Seat?

The 2019 HR-V seats five people in two rows. Its second row is one of the most spacious in the segment, providing more legroom than rivals like the 2019 Jeep Renegade . However, the front seats are narrow, and taller occupants may feel restrained by the lack of legroom. The seat cushions are also a touch firm.

For the most part, upscale materials line the cabin, though a few critics say that some of the trim pieces are a bit low-rent.

Standard seating features:

  • Cloth upholstery

Available seating features:

  • Leather upholstery
  • Eight-way power-adjustable driver’s seat
  • Heated front seats
  • Leather-wrapped steering wheel
How Many Child Car Seats Fit in the 2019 Honda HR-V?

This Honda has two complete sets of LATCH car-seat connectors for the rear outboard seats. The rear middle seat has an upper tether, and it can borrow a lower anchor from either side. The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety gave this Honda’s LATCH system the second-highest rating of Acceptable for ease of use because the lower anchors are set deeply in the seats, and the upper tethers could be confused for other hardware.

2019 Honda HR-V Features

The base HR-V has plenty of well-placed physical controls, but higher trims replace most of those with a touch screen that can be hard to use while driving. The menus aren’t arrayed in the most logical manner, and the system isn’t as modern as those in other Honda vehicles.

  • Standard infotainment features: a 5-inch display, a USB port, Bluetooth, and a four-speaker stereo
  • Available infotainment features: a 7-inch touch screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, navigation, a second USB port, satellite radio, HD Radio, and a six-speaker stereo
  • Other available features: push-button start, proximity keyless entry, remote start, automatic climate control, and a moonroof

This rear seat can flip up or fold flat to accommodate different kinds of cargo.
