. It describes the hillbilly values and culture that Vance learned from his grandparents while growing up in the Appalachian area of Ohio. Vance examines the problems that working-class white people face while simultaneously telling the story of his own journey from a humble upbringing to the Ivy League. A movie adaptation of Hillbilly Elegy directed by Ron Howard was released 2020.
