This museum has one of the best collections of Dutch Golden Age paintings. It's been long on my list to visit. The third floor dedicated mainly to Hals and Rembrandt. There are two small portraits by Hals listed as property of State Art Collections Kassel but this time they were on display at Wilhelmshohe, nice surprise.

Lovely place only a short stroll from the centre of the City, very close to the Cathedral, nice for a stroll around in the sunshine. Peaceful and calm.

During our stay in Frankfurt, we took an excursion to Kassel, the charming city of Grimm Brothers, famous German fairytale writers. After about 1.4 hour train ride from Frankfurt Hbf to Kassel-Wilhelmshöhe Bhf and a short taxi ride from the station, we arrived at the road side of Schloss Wilhelmshöhe (Wilhelmshohe Castle) inside Bergpark. From there, we walked around the vast and beautiful park, and walked all the way up to a fairytale like Schloss Lowenberg.
Unfortunately, the castle was under major renovation, limiting our access to the inside of the castle. But the castle was beautiful from outside even with construction barriers. The castle would look much more romantic and charming upon completion of its renovation. After admiring the outside view and limited inside view of the castle, we walked down all the way to the place where we got off our taxi. There, we took a taxi to the train station for our next excursion destination, Eisenach before returning to Frankfurt. This castle is a must see attraction in Kassel once the renovation is over. [An advice for future visitors to this castle and Hercules Monument: Take a taxi to near the top of the park, and get off there for the visits to Schloss Lowenberg and/or Hercules Monument first. Then, walk down toward Schloss Wilhelmshöhe at the bottom of the park, because the winding uphill path to the castle was often quite steep and very very far.]

Very nice castle park to walk around with a nice cafe to sit and enjoy the view as well. The castle could have been able to visit but at the time of the day was already closed.

Really wonderful surroundings...great place to stroll around and unwind right in the inner city! The Orangerie is a fantastic old historical building with a great restaurant with fantastic light meals and a cold beer! Winter or summer it's like being in a fairy tale wonderland!

We almost skipped going to the castle since it was a holiday and a couple sources indicated it was closed. We arrived and parked right out front. To our surprise the castle was open. Although the castle is small and pretty much a shell, we did climb the towers to observe the view.

I love this website. I was raised in Hanau from 72-96. Best years of my life. I got married twice at Schloss Philippsruhe. It is just beautiful. Hanau is one of the best places to grow up. I even lived in Steinheim and Freigericht for a while. My mom lived in Ravolzhausen. If my mother hadn't moved to Stuttgart I would still be coming home twice a year. I mill Hanau.

This is the best of many castles we've seen in Europe. It stands alone in a lovely landscape, is not commercialized, has a minimum of interpretive signage and the museum features everyday items used by people in the 14th--15th centuries. There is a senior discount to the entry fee, and ample parking. The self-guided tour allows access to many rooms via some steep and winding staircases, unfortunately difficult to impossible for those with mobility issues. There's a chapel, big gathering rooms, a kitchen, an armory, lovely views. Kids seemed to be having fun. We ate a good lunch at the adjacent restaurant, prices a bit above some others, but vegetarian special was good and service friendly and attentive. Just a small gift shop, and zero pressure to buy. Ronneburg is obviously a place of local pride. There are festivals, stage shows, reenactments, weddings, etc. held there. We are interested in the Amana colonies in Iowa, and the area around Ronneburg was their place of origin until the 1840-1860s when they migrated to USA seeking religious freedom. The Castle has few historical interpretations, but that's what wikipedia is for, right?

Loved this ruin. We saw a lot of abbey and castle ruins on our trip to Germany and I liked this one the best. They were unassuming and offered a pleasant surprise around every corner. Hardly anyone else there even though it was summer. The entrance is tucked away in a neighborhood but there’s good signage. On the way, you will find a stumble stone (brass plate on the street) that honors a victim of World War Two. The ruins do not open until 1 pm. There is also an exhibit in the main building but it is only open sometimes and not the day we were there. We could walk into the first room and see a very well done model of the complex. It was started by the Romans and added on/destroyed over the centuries. We were given a paper with the important points in English. The staff also spoke excellent English and there was a tiny gift shop with souvenirs. Outside there are clean restrooms and a few picnic tables. Inside the complex offers amazing view of the city especially from the Roman tower (the square one). The site costs just a few euro to enter. There is a café but it was closed the day we were there. The grounds were beautiful gardens and forest. Well worth the visit to this ruin and to the old city of Kronberg which is an easy 20-30 minute train ride from the Frankfurt Main Station.
There is no parking at this location and it is not ADA accessible.

Do not confuse this historic location with the Kronberg Castle Hotel. Those are two very different locations.

We travelled by rail from Frankfurt main station to Königstein im Taunus. The trip took about 30 min. Then, we decided to walk to the fotress to enjoy the atmosphere. We walked for about 1.3 km but the walk is a little steep. The town has a nice christmas atmosphere, and is very peaceful. The fortress has a great view over the Taunus area, and the higlight is the tower.

Just outside the citycenter of Bar Arolsen you will find a castle at your left hand side. A guided visit will learn you a lot of the history of the Dutch King and Queen.

While most of the palace is gone, the tower and the surrounding gardens are worth a visit. The city itself is also charming, lots of traditional houses if you like that "german old town" vibe. It's a nice half-a-day trip from Frankfurt.
