The official trailer for Transformers One is here, giving us a look at the first animated Transformers movie in 40 years.

In addition to this CG-driven animated style, we also get a glimpse at the early friendship between Optimus Prime and Megatron - known in this movie as Orion Pax and D-16, respectively - before they became enemies. In fact, the trailer opens with the Orion Pax (voiced by Chris Hemsworth) and D-16 (Brian Tyree Henry) in a friendly spat before they meet up with B-127 (Keegan-Michael Key) before he's known as Bumblebee. Elita-One (Scarlett Johansson) will also play a prominent role in what's been called a sort of "origin story" for the 'bots.

In an interview with IGN, director Josh Cooley (Inside Out, Toy Story 4) teased a bit more about the plot and what eventually drives Optimus Prime and Megatron apart, saying, "something happens on their planet (Cybertron) that they both have two different reactions to." We get a little hint of their conflict in the trailer, with Orion Pax asking, "Don't you want to see what's out there?," and D-16 exclaiming, "there's a reason no one goes to the surface."

They do, however, get to the surface, with a shot of the four in awe. What follows is some light-hearted footage of the group exploring the surface, as well as getting their transforming powers for the first time. They try those powers out with well, some, mixed results.

"It's time to show them we are more than meets the eye," Orion Pax says.

As an added bit of fun, the trailer launched from space, with a spacecraft revealing the footage from 125,000 feet above the Earth. Here on the ground, it's our first official look at Transformers One since Paramount Pictures showed off a few scenes in 3D for attendees at CinemaCon last week.

Transformers One will hit theaters on September 20.
