Ghost Stories of Henry James (Tales of Mystery & The Supernatural) Kindle Edition

With an Introduction and Notes by Martin Scofield, University of Kent at Canterbury.

Henry James was arguably the greatest practitioner of what has been called the psychological ghost story. His stories explore the region which lies between the supernatural or straightforwardly marvellous and the darker areas of the human psyche. This edition includes all ten of his ghost stories, and as such is the fullest collection currently available.

The stories range widely in tone and type. They include 'The Jolly Corner', a compelling story of psychological doubling; 'Owen Wingrave', which is also a subtle parable of military tradition; 'The Friends of the Friends', a strange story of uncanny love; and 'The Private Life', which finds a shrewd, high comedy in its ghostly theme.

The volume also includes James's great novella The Turn of the Screw, perhaps the most ambiguous and disturbing ghost story ever written.

Henry James is such an excellent author.

This is a great collection by one of the masters of literature. James once said that ‘A good ghost story… must be connected at a hundred points with the common objects of life.’ As such, James is concerned with exploring the human psyche, using realism and subtlety, not the standard thrills and chills fare of many Victorian ghost tales.

Besides an introduction and notes by Martin Scofield, University of Kent at Canterbury, this Wordsworth edition includes an author's preface to 'The Turn of the Screw and another preface to most of the stories in this collection.

Somehow Amazon has neglected to include a table of contents. Besides the aforementioned notes and prefaces, this Wordsworth edition includes the following stories:

The Romance of Certain Old Clothes
The Ghostly Rental
Sir Edmund Orme
The Private Life
Owen Wingrave
The Friends of the Friends
The Turn of the Screw -
The Real Right Thing
The Third Person
The Jolly Corner

Compared to the gore in today's murder, ghost, paranormal stories, these stories seen played-back and slow. A couple of the stories are very good despite the lack of action. Still, the Henry James style of writing is exceptional.

I saw 2 versions of Turn of the screw, the Netflix and BBC version and wanted to read the rest of his writings of Henry James. They are terrifying but based on real events. I could only read one story a day because the short stories are thought provoking and longer with you.Henry James is writing from 1875- 1911. Most of stories are set in New York and England but Henry James is American. The stories are worth reading if you like Poe, King, Rice and Shirley Jackson. Ghost stories that stay with you. There are a few introductions that help you understand the context and should be read. Turn of the screw is the most famous story but his other stories give a feeling of the excellent work and school be taught in a history of horror.

I adore Henry James and this collection doesn't disappoint. He treads the line between psychological and visceral horror with skill.

Not a review of the contents of the book but of the quality of the product.
It's pretty flimsy, so you have to be gentle with it. Cover feels thinner than most paperbacks.
But the margins are neat and the text is legible, and it's small and lightweight, which is nice for travel.

As for the contents, I love me an old fashioned ghost story or several. I bought it to see how much of it was put into The Haunting of Bly Manor beyond just The Turn of the Screw.

5.0 out of 5 stars Excellent collection of James's Gothic tales

Great book with very interesting introduction to James's Gothic style. James's prefaces to the stories help a lot to understand what the Gothic genre was at at that time.

4.0 out of 5 stars Ghosts for the Grown-up
Reviewed in Canada on May 2, 2016
As could be expected of this author, the stories are both subtle and original. They have endings which, in most cases, are unpredictable, which increases their appeal. They also seem strangely modern in their outlook, themes and treatment. And the novella, Turn of the Screw, is always worth rereading. My only quibble is that the cover illustrations on this and other recent Wordsworth Series by Nathan Clair, are really too grisly. This is particularly true of the Henry James volume.

1.0 out of 5 stars The Decline of Kindle
Reviewed in Australia on October 28, 2014
The whole point of Kindle is being able to navigate around a text. This means for example hypertexting footnotes so you can flip to them and then back to where you were in the text. This version doesn't have those facilities, so I cannot recommend it. It seems to be a growing trend in Kindle to rush inferior products onto the screen without any quality controls. They still insist that any new authors wanting to put their books on line provide all the electronic facilities yet they are allowing established publishers to put inferior product on screen. I am rapidly loosing patience with Kindle. Don't buy this book until it is brought up to standard.
