Campaign Maps/Mods (Heart of the Swarm)
Preloaded Campaign Missions
This is a quick walkthrough on how to load up existing missions already created and used for the Heart of the Swarm Campaign.
Anything and everything that has been created in Heart of the Swarm can be played and even loaded up in the Galaxy Editor. (Yes even the Evolution Missions)
Note
Playing these missions will spoil the story elements of the game. When loading and playing these missions, it will play just as if you were going through the campaign normally.
Walkthrough on accessing Heart of the Swarm Missions
First go ahead and open up the StarCraft 2 Map Editor by selecting your icon in your start menu or if your playing on a Mac, it should be located in the Applications Section. You will then be brough up to the main screen seen above.
Go ahead and select the Open Folder Menu in order to bring up the open menu. This will first show that you have no data in your local files. This case is true unless you already have started playing and saving your own custom Map, Mod, or Game Project.
Next you will select the Campaign Tab in order to locate the Mission Campaign Map Files. A warning box will appear indicating that there will be spoilers ahead if you havent played the campaign. Please read and understand the warning.
Next expand the Campaign Folder at the top of the list. Now all of the listed files that are in the Swarm Folder are the Heart of the Swarm Missions you can play. These are the vary same ones used in the Campaign of Heart of the Swarm. When you select one of the files, keep an eye on the information on the right of the open window as it will show you information such as the name of the Mission. All of these names are attributed to the names of the Heart of the Swarm Missions. Select the one you would like and then select the OK button.
The Map will take a second to load up and your display will look similar to this. Now feel free to dissect and modify all the objects on the Mission Maps. This will help in giving you an idea of how maps were developed from Blizzard Entertainment, as well as giving you an idea of how to create awesome missions from the campaign. Feel free to select all the Modules, Units, Cameras etc... in order to try and understand how maps are made.
Word of Caution
Keep in mind these are campaign files used in the game. So whatever you do, DO NOT SAVE OVER THE CAMPAIGN FILES. Feel free to save separate copies of these files and make changes. But if you save over the Campaign Files themselves, then you could potentially cause an issue to your game. It is possible this may have changed since the WIngs of Liberty Release, but its better to be safe than sorry. You could always uninstall and reinstall to fix the issue if you do happen to overwrite the Campaign Files.
Next if you want to play the Campaign Mission, go ahead and select the StarCraft II Icon at the top of the window, this is the Test Document Icon. This will load up the game and play the map like it does in th Campaign Mode of StarCraft II. Once you are finished with the Mission, you will then be taken to the Main Screen.
Important Note
When playing the missions this way, Achievements cannot be achieved and granted to your profile. They will not count.
