A fairly basic aquarium bolstered by innovative ant and reptile displays
The Haus des Meeres (House of the Sea or Aqua Terra Zoo) is a public aquarium in Esterhazy Park, Vienna. Known to house roughly 10,000 creatures ranging from Komodo Dragons and Ants to Sharks the concrete tower was built during World War and stretches several stories up. Compromised by limited nearby parking and a high entry price expect to spend 90-120 minutes browsing the collection.

Really worths visiting just a corner away from Mariahilfer Strasse
We arrived at 7pm and got in with evening tickets. We only had an hour, but we really enjoyed the visit. A little more time would have been better, I think 1.5 hours is optimal for this programme, 2 hours with children, as there is much to see over the 11 floors. The spectacular view from the top of the building is an extra advantage, but the top terrace can be visited for free as there is a restaurant up there. I really like the way the ugly concrete flak tower was turned into this beautiful and creative aquarium by fantastic architects.

Customer service TOPNOTCH, Surprisingly, very great staff. Full day activity for kids and 360 degree lounge and bar was amazing. Food and snacks available on site and a big park right downstairs. Pricy bt worth every penny.

    An amazing place
We visited the aquarium some days ago and we were amazed. There are different species of fish, snakes, reptiles and sea creatures. There is also a wonderful view from above. It's worth visiting and I definitely suggest it if you visit Vienna, also the staff is very helpful and kind

Amazing aquarium and zoo across multiple levels. Well worth a visit.
This place is not your average aquarium! We started our exploration from the 11th floor and worked our way down (as recommended) and it just kept on giving. Housed in a former anti-aircraft tower dating from the Second World War, the aquarium/zoo features a variety of habitats arranged in different rooms and tanks stretching across the many floors and accessed via 2 lifts and various staircases. Highlights of the visit for us included the monitor lizard, sea turtle, shark tank and getting up close with the monkeys! You could easily spend half a day here, and longer if you had the stamina. There is a bar/restaurant on the top floor, which you have to book in advance, as well as a small café on the 4th floor serving pastries, tea, coffee etc. If you are interested in the history of the tower (Flakturm) there is a fascinating exhibition on the 10th floor, which includes a number of artefacts from the War. However, all information is in German (perhaps unsurprisingly) so I mainly looked at the pictures, uniforms, weapons and contemporary objects. I cannot recommend this venue enough. If you are in Vienna, go there.

    Unexpected find
Literally no plans to come here and spotted a strange building with leafs all over it and a viewing deck. Popped in to take a look and it was insanely weird experience. Essentially an eclectic collection of animals in a tower block with some exhibits along the way. Some are walk through like the birds and monkeys. There’s an amazing view of the city from the top with 360 degree views. I’ve given it 4 stars as there’s a few things I may need to confirm. Some of the tanks looked small to me, as they had an anaconda (a huge one too) in what looked a very small enclosure which did sit with me a bit awkwardly. Definitely worth visiting

    Book in advance
We visited Vienna for 3 days. During this time one of the things to see was also Haus des Meeres. Never we have imagined that we should be thinking about booking all attractions in advance. Online tickets were sold out,so we waited in line for 2 hours. Money wise,it is well worth it. It really is amazing and must see, children loved it. Negative is that there is not enough toilets for such mass of people. Also was missing more places to buy some food, or snacks. Again when it is crowded, you will wait a lot. But overall it was great.

    Excellent ww2 guide
Fantastic aquarium in a very historically important building in the city. The whole of the aquarium was incredibly interesting with a wide variety of life that have big enough enclosures with some areas open to walk around. The best part of our experience though was the area dedicated to ww2 near the top of the flak tower with a very knowledgeable, passionate and friendly gentleman. Excellent English and he was able to answer all of our questions with incredible detail. He made the visit for us. Thank you!!

Great aquarium, but more like a whole zoo inside a building!
We went here on a whim - it wasn't originally on the list we had for Vienna, but I'm very glad we went. We expected just an aquarium, but the range of exhibits here is much larger than you might expect. There's a multi-storey open area with monkeys, tortoises and a crocodile, a few open areas with birds, reptiles, snakes & spiders, and the expected large tanks with fish & sharks. Pleasantly surprised with the range of exhibits. There is also a restaurant / café on the 11th floor, surrounded by a viewing platform for views over the city. The viewing platform is open to access, either as a café visitor or an aquarium guest. Great photo opportunity. The venue recommends for the aquarium starting at the top floor and working down, though if I were to go again I would start at the bottom and work up. The flow through the aquarium seems to work better that way.

An amazing aquarium and zoo located in the only WW2 Flak tower accessible by the public. Everything is imaginatively presented and very well done. The restaurant on the top floor with a terrace around it gave great 360 degree views of Vienna. There is less on the levels as you work upwards so don't rush thinking you have so many floors still to go. Being someone interested in the building and its history I was pleased to find a small museum at the top, along with the author of a book on the subject to talk to. There is improvement work going on but that is fair enough and it caused no problem.

This was one of my favourite experiences in my summer trip to Vienna. You might find a bit expensive the entrance price ( 19.90 euros) but it worth every cent! 11 floors that travels you to the deep of the ocean with sharks and giant turtles or to the jungle life with monkeys and crocodiles. But the most impressive is the 360 restaurant at the 12th floor. The view is amazing. I enjoyed a pumpkin soup looking Vienna from the sky! If you are travelling to Austria’s capital, don’t miss it!

Not sure which is more spectacular, the aquarium or the view. And they’ve got a crocodile 😃. Level by level of pure fun and information and the Australia exhibit is thrilling. The views alone are worth the entry fee, which I suppose is reasonable for what you get. Not even the crowds put a dampener on this experience. The way they showcase the Ants is ingenious.

During the winter period, highly recommend to avoid visiting Hays des Meeres. The problem was not the waiting time to enter but some crazy air conditioning procedures where they blow very cold air. It was much warmer outside then when we entered their facility. My family literally freezed. I wanted to share my unpleasant experience with their staff but the owner Mr Hans Koppen was not that open for understanding. I have traveled all around the world and never experienced something that unpleasant.
For us this was the first and the last time.
As well, I would recommend Mr Koppen, who is the owner, and his team that they use New Year 2020 for customer experience improvements.

We spent some time out of the rain and cold during our august visit. The exhibits are impressive, lots of cool stuff to look at and learn about. Unique ant exhibit which was really unexpected. Also really awesome to see those Komodo dragons. Great views from the top along with a cafe / restaurant. Was a bottleneck at the ticket counter. Anyone concerned with picking up an airborne respiratory virus should consider their options as people are packed in here like sardines - with seemingly very little ventilation- just an FYI - it didn’t adversely affect our trip other than it was really busy, stuffy and hot

Outside entrance there were two lines of equal length. We waited for about an hour to get admitted, and after getting to the front of the line we were told that we were in the line for tickets purchased online.

We asked if we could buy the tickets online to get admitted, and were told that yes - the moment we bought the tickets, we were to be admitted.

After buying the tickets, we got to know that there was a one hour waiting time to get the tickets by e-mail, and were told to go to the back of the line to wait another hour.

The experience can be summarized as agressive sales tactics to boost sales - we were not admitted.

We were expecting more.
Have visited aquarium a rainy day of August waiting more than one hour for the tickets as was only one cashier to buy tickets in the entrance!
Having in mind the tourists visiting Vienna in August this is not proper and professional to have just one cashier!
Building is very beautiful with big plus the view of Vienna at last floor.
But taking into consideration what you can see then is considered a poor aquarium comparing same in other European countries.
