Lucy Taylor (Jodie Sweetin) prefers her coffee to be a grande coconut mocha with extra whip. So does Jack Evans (David Haydn-Jones). A mini-snafu involving their favorite beverages is how they first meet, in the Kanaka Creek Coffee place. She's a grade school teacher. He's a civil engineer and a widower of some years. She's lived all her life in the west coast town of Ocean Hill, purported to be the "rainbow capital of America." He'd just moved there from Chicago, he and his ten-year-old daughter Sophie (Dakota Guppy, how cute is that name?). Sophie, if you must know, chases rainbows for poignant reasons we find out in due time.I should slap on a plot spoiler alert.For this or that reason, Lucy hasn't had good luck in love. Her pregnant sister, Dana (Rebecca Davis), who's been happily married for ten years, urges Lucy to put herself out there, even reminds her of that wedding wish book she made as a kid.Since Hallmark dabbles in coincidences, it's no surprise that when Jack takes his daughter to her new school, come to find out her new teacher is none other than Lucy, imagine that. Lucy immediately involves Sophie in the class' science fair project. What are the odds Sophie, rainbow chaser, will pick something rainbow-oriented?Hallmark tosses in a few side stories. Jack is having a time crunch at his new job. His boss had saddled him with the refurbishment of the Ocean Park bridge and then had promised the town the job will be done in three weeks. There's also the small matter of Lucy's parents' upcoming fortieth wedding anniversary. And there's how her mom feels neglected since all her dad does is obsess about baseball.3 out of 5 stars for LOVE UNDER THE RAINBOW. It's okay. It's sweet enough. To be honest, I wasn't feeling the pairing of these two leads. Most of the movie is Lucy's putting herself out there and Jack behaving in ambivalent fashion. Movie's chock full of the rom-com tropes Hallmark likes to insert, but there's no snap to the dialogue. The best thing about the movie is probably the little girl. If you relish rainbows and baseball metaphors, then check this one out. If you're looking for teachable moments, I guess you do get to find out what the rarest rainbow is. I was also compelled to look up the word "charcuterie," so there's that.
