Baseball Swept at St. Olaf

NORTHFIELD, Minn. - The Gustavus baseball team suffered its first conference sweep since 2022 on Tuesday, losing 1-0 and 9-7 at St. Olaf, dropping to 15-14 overall and 7-7 in the MIAC.

Gustavus 0, St. Olaf 1

The Oles connected for a solo home run to lead off the second inning that proved to be the difference in a pitchers' duel.

Mitch Casperson started on the mound for the Gusties and tossed two innings, allowing the solo home run and two other hits, moving to 4-4 on the season. Hunter Sheehan closed out the last four innings and allowed just two hits with five strikeouts.

Sam Lavin won the battle on the mound for the Oles, shutting out the Gusties with three hits and 11 strikeouts in six innings.

Bryce Novak, Gavin Baker, and Danny Gavin had the three hits for the Gusties.

Gustavus 7, St. Olaf 9

The Oles rolled their momentum into game two, scoring four runs in the first on just one hit and an error, while taking advantage of some erratic pitching. Gustavus answered in the second, cutting the lead in half. Brayden Kohls hit a sac fly to score Chris Knowles, who reach on a single. Danny Gavin, who doubled, then scored on a wild pitch. But the Oles punched right back with three runs in the bottom half on three hits to go up 7-2.

The game continued to be a back and fourth affair as the Gusties responded with three runs of their own in the third. Knowles singled home Novak, who was hit by a pitch. Gavin then hit his second double of the game to score Brady Schmitz, who reach on a walk. Kohls followed with an infield single to score Knowles.

St. Olaf added a run in the fourth, making the score 8-5. The fifth and sixth innings went scoreless before the Gusties got a run back in the seventh. Ross Hebel led off with a walk and scored on a sac fly by Schmitz. The Gusties cut the difference to one in the eighth as Dylan Kopesky hit a sac fly to score Gavin, but the Oles got that run right back in the bottom half on a bases loaded walk. Novak, making just his second pitching appearances of the season, got out of the jam with a strikeout and a pop up to strand the bases full.

Novak then led off the ninth with a single up the middle but the Oles secured the sweep with a strikeout and double play the end the game.

Gavin led the Gusties at the plate, hitting 3-for-4 with two doubles, two runs, and an RBI. The Gusties used six pitchers in the game as Luke Siegle suffered the loss.

Gustavus hosts Crown College in a single nine inning non-conference game at 4 p.m. Wednesday.
