Pour la France This season, travel to Paris — by way of Boettcher Concert Hall.

When it comes to painting, few eras of art history were as influential as the Impressionist period which peaked in the late 1800s, when an imaginative group of boldly talented artists embraced a new approach to light, color, subject and form. The works of Impressionist masters—Monet, Cézanne, Degas and many more—are among the most beloved, and recognizable, in the world. Today the term “Impressionism” is synonymous with all things French: the buzzing cafés and sidewalks of Montmarte, the glamour of the opera house, the dreamy pastoralism of the countryside. Of course, music was an important part of the creative confluence that culminated with Impressionism. Many of the great composers were drawn to, and inspired by, the City of Light, including Wolfang Amadeus Mozart, who moved to Paris in 1778 at age 22, seeking employment, unsuccessfully; Frédéric Chopin moved to Paris in 1831 at the age of 20, never to return to Poland. Impressionism’s influence—of color, atmosphere, imagination—carried on in the works of two of France’s greatest composers, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, in the early 20th century. Beginning this month, the Colorado Symphony presents a series of French-themed concerts and activities that complement “Passport to Paris” at the Denver Art Museum, a sweeping exhibition that features three collections and

Both the exhibition and the concert series celebrate a rare period in history when great musicians and visual artists shared the same creative environment – feeding and being fed by Paris as it birthed a cultural revolution. “I can’t imagine a more impactful collaboration than the Colorado Symphony and the Denver Art Museum working together to commemorate 300 years of French work,” says Anthony Pierce, Vice President of Artistic Administration for the Colorado Symphony. “Examining the relationship between visual and musical arts during the various periods

of French history has been a tremendous, fun challenge, and the repertoire we’ve curated is sensual and diverse, with something for everyone.” The concert series spans French-themed Masterworks, Pops and education programs, and free, public performances. Highlights include: • Passport to Paris, November 1–3, conducted by Douglas Boyd. This program showcases two Colorado Symphony musicians as soloists, including Principal Flute Brook Ferguson, who performs Claude Debussy’s Syrinx for flute alone; and Principal Viola Basil Vendryes, who is featured on Harold in Italy by Hector Berlioz. • Inside the Score: Impressionism on November 15 will provide an interactive platform for exploring the interplay between French history and philosophy and its manifestation in great works of art and music. Curated by Scott O’Neil with special guest Angelica Daneo, Associate Curator of the Denver Art Museum, the program includes projections of great Impressionist paintings shown in tandem with the music. On November 13 and 14, Inside the Score: Impressionism will be offered to high school students as part of the Colorado Symphony Kids program. Hamilton Building, with a series of afternoon concerts that celebrate the canon of classical French music. The Colorado Symphony will also curate a soundtrack for the four galleries within the historical Court to Café: Three Centuries of French Masterworks from the Wadsworth Atheneum, complementing the art on the walls with music that reflects and illuminates the works’ history. Passport to Paris marks the second time the Colorado Symphony and the Denver Art Museum have worked together to explore intersections between visual art and symphonic music. Last November, the orchestra performed a program that complemented DAM’s wildly successful Becoming Van Gogh exhibition; Faure’s “Requiem” and “Pavane” were among the pieces performed as works by Van Gogh, drawn from his years in Paris, were projected on large screens. “We are thrilled to collaborate with the Colorado Symphony in creating for our visitors an immersive experience, where three hundred

years of important masterpieces of French art can be appreciated in the context of their time,” says DAM’s Angelica Daneo. “It was a time when both music and visual arts were responding to the same profound changes in history and culture.” Enjoy the journey.

“As a conductor, the period of art history represented by Passport to Paris represents a very rich opportunity. It was the one time in history that the noteworthy artists and composers, the practitioners of visual and auditory art that we now know as masters, were alive and working at the same time. It was a very special and unique time, when these people knew each other.” — Scott O’Neil, Resident Conductor, Colorado Symphony

For over two decades, the Chorus has been featured at the world-renowned Aspen Music Festival, performing such diverse repertoire as the Bernstein Mass, Mahler’s massive Symphony No. 8, Honegger’s unique Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake), Britten’s Peter Grimes, the Berlioz Requiem, and the epic Schoenberg Gurre~Lieder, under the baton of notable conductors Lawrence Foster, James Levine, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano and David Zinman. The Colorado Symphony Chorus has appeared at select public and special events, and has collaborated with many renowned Colorado arts ensembles, including the Colorado Children’s Chorale, Central City Opera, Opera Colorado and the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble. The chorus sang at the 1991 opening gala for the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre; provided choral support for international opera star José Carreras; tenor Andrea Bocelli; and participated in the 1993 Papal Vigil when Pope John Paul II visited Denver. It has performed the works of a number of Colorado composers, including Samuel Lancaster and John Kuzma, and has had works written especially for it by Colorado Symphony composers-in-residence Jon Deak and Libby Larsen. The Colorado Symphony Chorus is featured on a recent NAXOS release of Roy Harris’ Symphony No. 4. In July 2009, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the chorus, Duain Wolfe led the chorus on a three-country, two-week concert tour of Europe, presenting the Verdi Requiem in Budapest, Vienna, Litomysl and Prague, with a final presentation in Aspen! From Evergreen to Lochbuie, and Boulder to Castle Rock, singers travel each week to rehearsals and performances in Denver totaling about 80 a year. The Colorado Symphony continues to be grateful for the excellence and dedication of this remarkable all-volunteer ensemble! For an audition appointment, call 303.308.2483.

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES RAVEL: Rapsodie espagnole Scored for two flutes and two piccolos, two oboes and English horn, two clarinets and bass clarinet, three bassoons and contrabassoon, four horns, three trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, percussion, celesta, two harps, and strings. Duration is 17 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on April 9-11, 1999, with Lan Shui conducting. Spain and France are two neighbors who, in artistic terms, have been long fascinated with each other. For much of music history, the greatest Spanish composers made their way across the mountains to Paris in their search for musical training. As for the French, they may have found their training in their own native land, yet they often looked south for musical inspiration. Maurice Ravel (1875-1937) was one of these, though in his case, the exotic accents were not completely foreign. Raised in Paris, he had been born near the Pyrenees and his mother was of Basque extraction. So in his case, it may be natural curiosity as well as a taste for new flavors that led his imagination outside the borders of France. In 1928, the year he would write Bolero, Ravel actually crossed the border to visit Spain, but his ideas had preceded him with several Spanish flavored compositions. One movement of his piano suite, Miroirs (1905), drew inspiration from an image of a Spanish jester serenading his sweetheart; even more ambitious was the Rapsodie espagnole, completed in 1908. A four-movement orchestral suite, it evokes sharply changing moods, ranging from mournful to celebratory, and draws forth Spanish instrumental effects such as the combined efforts of trumpet and tambourine that seem to sing of Spanish dancing. The opening movement sets the stage with a mysterious nocturnal mood. Next, Ravel turns to the lively, fandango-like malague単a of Malaga in southern Spain. The dreamy third movement Habanera looks further afield, to the capital city of Cuba, then a Spanish colony; this movement had originated a decade earlier in a two-piano suite which so impressed Debussy that he borrowed first the printed music, then its rhythmic effects for use in one of his own Spanish-tinged piano compositions. For his conclusion, Ravel draws upon the festive atmosphere of a feria with frenetic dance rhythms that drive the work into its final bars.

o RAVEL: Piano Concerto in G major Scored for solo piano, flute, piccolo, oboe, English horn, clarinet, E-flat clarinet, two bassoons, two horns, trumpet, trombone, timpani, snare drum, whip, triangle, cymbals, woodblock, bass drum, tam-tam, harp, and strings. Duration is 23 minutes. Last performance by the Colorado Symphony was on May 15-17, 2009, with Jean-Yves Thibaudet as the soloist and James Gaffigan conducting. Ravel and the piano were old friends. He first entered the Paris Conservatoire as a piano student and his catalog contains much solo piano music. However, Ravel composed only two piano concertos, both in the last years of his productive life when ill health was encroaching upon his PROGRAM 6 SOUNDINGS 2013/14 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES faculties. These two concertos would be his last major works. By the time the Concerto in G major premiered January 14, 1932, Ravel was no longer strong enough to act as soloist. He could only conduct, leaving the soloist’s duties to Marguerite Long. Although the concertos were children of his waning years, they may have been informally in progress for some time, for Ravel himself always felt that time to think about a composition before writing it was vital. “I judge a long period of gestation necessary,” he explained, adding “one must spend time in eliminating all that could be regarded as superfluous in order to realize as completely as possible the definitive clarity so much desired.” Thus, though he did not begin setting the two concertos to paper until 1930, Ravel was likely working them up in his imagination much earlier in his career. This scenario seems particularly likely in the case of the G-major Concerto, for though it dates from a time of failing health, the composition exudes the joy and verve of youth. Ravel had recently returned from an American tour during which he had been most impressed by the sassy sounds of jazz; these quickly permeated the score. This, in itself, is unsurprising; jazz had become the voice of the decade. Yet to blend American jazz, syncopation and all, with echoes of Mozart and Saint-Saëns required the hand of a master. According to Ravel himself, Mozart’s Clarinet Quintet was the direct inspiration for his own second movement. The Saint-Saëns connection seems to lie in the personality of the piece, for it is generally light and carefree, like the best of the earlier Frenchman’s piano concerti. “I believe,” wrote Ravel of the piece, “that a concerto can be gay and brilliant and that there is no necessity for it to aim at profundity or big dramatic effects.” He clearly achieved that goal, for the Concerto in G major is bright and buoyant, brimming with joie de vivre. It is the sort of piece that Mozart might have written had he lived in the early years of the jazz age.

o RAVEL: Daphnis et Chloé Scored for Soprano Alto Tenor Bass (SATB) chorus, three flutes (second and third doubling piccolo), alto flute, two oboes, English horn, two B-flat clarinets, E-flat clarinet, bass clarinet, three bassoons, contrabassoon, four horns, four trumpets, three trombones, tuba, timpani, glockenspiel, triangle, wind machine, tambourine, bass drum, cymbals, crotales, tam-tam, celesta, two harps, and strings. Duration is 58 minutes. This is the first performance of the complete ballet by the Colorado Symphony. Daphnis and Chloé were legendary lovers of ancient Greece. Their story of faith in the face of great trials persisted over the centuries, ultimately coming to the attention of the French composer Maurice Ravel through a 16th‑century French manuscript. Being an idealistic man, though one without a wife, Ravel was enchanted by this story of true love rewarded, and vowed to someday set it to music. His opportunity came through the Ballets Russes. The famed Russian dance company first performed in Paris in 1909. During that visit, its impresario, Sergei Diagilev, met with the composer to discuss the possibility of staging a Ravel composition. The agreed topic was the SOUNDINGS 2013/14 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG PROGRAM 7

MASTERWORKS PROGRAM NOTES tale of Daphnis and Chloé. Ravel immediately set to work on the score, which was intended for a Parisian premiere in 1910. However, the composer was so painstaking with his work that the ballet was not finished until 1912. During the intervening years, Diaghilev had to content himself with scores by his other favorite composer, Igor Stravinsky, specifically The Firebird and Petrushka. Daphnis et Chloé premiered June 8, 1912 with Vaclav Nijinsky and Tamara Karsavina dancing the title roles. This performance was just a few days after Nijinsky’s choreography for Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun had caused a scandal. Apparently, the Parisians thought the Debussy ballet was rather too racy, but Ravel’s score was quite a success. Perhaps the audience was relieved by the tale’s familiar outline: boy-loves-girl, boy-loses-girl, boy-finds-girl-again. Whatever the reason, the ballet was popular at the time, and it has continued to be praised as Ravel’s greatest effort. In an orchestral performance, there are no dancers and no specific story. However, an overview of the original plot helps listeners to sense what the composer is attempting with his music. Daphnis and Chloé have gathered in a sacred grove in tribute to the god Pan. A jealous rival tries to part them, but more formidable is an invasion of pirates, who abduct Chloé. In his despair, Daphnis prays to Pan; the god intervenes to rescue her. At dawn, she is returned to Daphnis, as a magnificent sunrise breaks. That Pan was inspired to help by his own love for the nymph Syrinx is symbolized musically by a prominent flute solo, the flute being his own instrument and also representative of Syrinx herself. At the close, the whole company joins in an ecstatic Bacchanal, represented by some of the most exuberant music Ravel would ever write.
