When it comes to painting, few eras of art history were as influential as the Impressionist period which peaked in the late 1800s, when an imaginative group of boldly talented artists embraced a new approach to light, color, subject and form. The works of Impressionist masters—Monet, Cézanne, Degas and many more—are among the most beloved, and recognizable, in the world. Today the term “Impressionism” is synonymous with all things French: the buzzing cafés and sidewalks of Montmarte, the glamour of the opera house, the dreamy pastoralism of the countryside. Of course, music was an important part of the creative confluence that culminated with Impressionism. Many of the great composers were drawn to, and inspired by, the City of Light, including Wolfang Amadeus Mozart, who moved to Paris in 1778 at age 22, seeking employment, unsuccessfully; Frédéric Chopin moved to Paris in 1831 at the age of 20, never to return to Poland. Impressionism’s influence—of color, atmosphere, imagination—carried on in the works of two of France’s greatest composers, Claude Debussy and Maurice Ravel, in the early 20th century. Beginning this month, the Colorado Symphony presents a series of French-themed concerts and activities that complement “Passport to Paris” at the Denver Art Museum, a sweeping exhibition that features three collections and

Both the exhibition and the concert series celebrate a rare period in history when great musicians and visual artists shared the same creative environment – feeding and being fed by Paris as it birthed a cultural revolution. “I can’t imagine a more impactful collaboration than the Colorado Symphony and the Denver Art Museum working together to commemorate 300 years of French work,” says Anthony Pierce, Vice President of Artistic Administration for the Colorado Symphony. “Examining the relationship between visual and musical arts during the various periods

of French history has been a tremendous, fun challenge, and the repertoire we’ve curated is sensual and diverse, with something for everyone.” The concert series spans French-themed Masterworks, Pops and education programs, and free, public performances. Highlights include: • Passport to Paris, November 1–3, conducted by Douglas Boyd. This program showcases two Colorado Symphony musicians as soloists, including Principal Flute Brook Ferguson, who performs Claude Debussy’s Syrinx for flute alone; and Principal Viola Basil Vendryes, who is featured on Harold in Italy by Hector Berlioz. • Inside the Score: Impressionism on November 15 will provide an interactive platform for exploring the interplay between French history and philosophy and its manifestation in great works of art and music. Curated by Scott O’Neil with special guest Angelica Daneo, Associate Curator of the Denver Art Museum, the program includes projections of great Impressionist paintings shown in tandem with the music. The Colorado Symphony will also curate a soundtrack for the four galleries within the historical Court to Café: Three Centuries of French Masterworks from the Wadsworth Atheneum, complementing the art on the walls with music that reflects and illuminates the works’ history. Passport to Paris marks the second time the Colorado Symphony and the Denver Art Museum have worked together to explore intersections between visual art and symphonic music. Last November, the orchestra performed a program that complemented DAM’s wildly successful Becoming Van Gogh exhibition; Faure’s “Requiem” and “Pavane” were among the pieces performed as works by Van Gogh, drawn from his years in Paris, were projected on large screens. “We are thrilled to collaborate with the Colorado Symphony in creating for our visitors an immersive experience, where three hundred

HOLIDAY PROGRAM NOTES TOO HOT TO HANDEL George Frideric Handel was on a roll in the spring of 1742, when he premiered his great oratorio: Messiah. It was reported in the Dublin Journal by an anonymous critic that, “On Tuesday last Mr. Handel’s Sacred Grand Oratorio, the Messiah, was performed at the New Musical Hall in Fishamble Street. The Sublime, the Grand and the Tender, adapted to the most elevated, majestik and moving Words, conspired to transport and charm the ravished Heart and Ear.” Two hundred and sixty-one years later, Handel’s Messiah is one of the most performed and popular choral works appreciated by audiences all over the world. Instantly recognizable is the famous “Hallelujah Chorus,” during which it is customary to stand. It is exactly that sense of excitement that prompted conductor Marin Alsop to suggest giving Handel’s Messiah a new twist. Too Hot to Handel grew from an idea to fruition in the hands of Alsop’s colleagues: Gary Anderson and Bob Christianson, who recreated this gospel and jazz version adaptation of Messiah in 1992. The sensational new appeal of Too Hot to Handel — which premiered in 1993 with Marin Alsop and the Concordia Orchestra — has been met with the same enthusiasm as when the ink was fresh in 1742. Alsop, in collaboration with Christianson and Anderson, envisioned the Messiah in a way that captures a fresh “feel” and thrill, while retaining Handel’s original musical intent. “It’s a great story, but I also think that it requires some kind of audience participation. It becomes an active listening experience when you’re allowed to stand up and clap your hands…” says Alsop. The creative team of Alsop-Christianson-Anderson decided their adaptation would encompass jazz, gospel, rock and funk to “break the classical sound barrier.” The result is a swinging performance of the traditional oratorio. —Ella M. HOLIDAY BIOGRAPHIES CYNTHIA RENÉE, soprano Cynthia Renée Saffron has used her vocal talents to entertain audiences around the world. While pursuing a bachelor’s degree in music piano performance from Morgan State University, she toured many years with the famed Morgan State University Choir. Audiences include Japan, Bermuda, Czech Republic, Spain, United States and more. Cynthia’s passion for the arts have led to roles in theater as well. She performed at the Alliance Theater, Arena Stage, and Dallas Theater Center in Sheldon Epps’ Blues in the Night, under the direction of the talented broadway director Kenny Leon. ArtsCentric Theatre Company’s productions of Into the Woods and Night of January Sixteenth were among some of her favorite starring roles. She has also worked behind the scenes as music director at Toby’s Dinner Theatre in Maryland for Dreamgirls and Beehive. In addition to her live performances, Cynthia Renee’s vocals can be heard in a variety of recordings. Wynton Marsalis’ All Rise, Morgan State University Choir’s Live in Prague, GIA Publishing Use Me and May the Work I’ve Done Speak for Me, Soulful Symphony’s Song in a Strange Land and her freshman album, Loving Me. She is currently pursuing a master of arts degree in voice at Morgan State University. Of all of her accomplishments, she is most proud to be mom to her 18-month-old son and a wife.
VANEESE THOMAS, mezzo-soprano Vaneese Thomas was born in Memphis, Tennessee, the daughter of legendary R&B musician Rufus Thomas. Today, her mission is to continue the legacy set by her influential father and carry on the heritage of Memphis music and traditional R&B that touches generations and crosses divides. Thomas has cultivated her own style by blending all the influences of her background — R&B, gospel, blues and jazz — and her voice has led her to numerous countries, genres, performers and audiences. She has worked with an array of internationally known performers including Sting, Stevie Wonder, Natalie Cole, B.B. King, Eric Clapton, Luther Vandross, Michael Jackson, Chaka Kahn, Joe Cocker, Celine Dion, Annie Lennox, Patti LaBelle and many others. She has performed in Europe, Asia, and in the U.S. at concerts and festivals, including the Pavarotti & Friends 2002 for Angola concerts. In 1987, Geffen Records released Vaneese, which included the Top Ten R&B hit, Let’s Talk it Over. In 1999, Thomas’ gospel/crossover record, When My Back’s Against The Wall, was released. In 2003, she released an R&B record, A Woman’s Love. Thomas also lends her voice to characters, movie soundtracks and television, with credits including Disney’s Hercules as the voice of Clio the Muse, Goddess of History (1997); Anastasia (1997); The First Wives Club (1996); and the Oscarnominated Seraglio (2000), among others. HOLIDAY BIOGRAPHIES LAWRENCE CLAYTON, tenor Lawrence Clayton has recently performed in the World Rock Symphony Orchestra, Briton Rocks, at the Fallsview Casino in Ontario, Canada. Nationally, he appeared as Jean Valjean in the 25th anniversary production of Les Misérables. He also starred in the New York premiere of Jerry Springer the Opera at Carnegie Hall with Harvey Keitel and reprised the role at the Sydney Opera House. Broadway appearances include Bells Are Ringing, It Ain’t Nothin But the Blues, The Civil War, Once Upon a Mattress and Dreamgirls. Off Broadway includes, Crowns at Second Stage, (Audelco Award), Saturn Returns and Romance in Hard Times at The Public Theater, and Judas in Jesus Christ Superstar at the Paramount Theater at Madison Square Garden. Regional audiences have seen him in productions of Big River, Jesus Christ Superstar, The Boys from Syracuse, Betsy Brown, Sophisticated Ladies and Avenue X. On the small screen Clayton has appeared in episodes of The Good Wife, The Big C, All My Children, Another World, As the World Turns, One Life to Live, Deadline, Law and Order: CI and the made-for-TV movie Mary and Rhoda. He lent his voice to the Rankin-Bass animated Christmas special Santa Baby starring Vanessa Williams, Gregory Hines and Eartha Kitt. CLIFFORD CARTER, piano Keyboardist and composer Clifford Carter has blazed his mark in the worlds of jazz, pop, rock n’ roll, gospel and more. He has performed and recorded with legendary artists ranging from Art Garfunkel, James Taylor, Linda Ronstadt, Natalie Cole, Bette Midler and Carly Simon to Chris Botti and Paul Simon. Carter can be heard on film scores, television shows and commercials. His songs have been recorded by Michael Franks, Phyllis Hyman, Vanessa Williams and The Four Tops, among others, and for his own solo CD, Walkin’ Into the Sun. In addition, he owns Secret Road Studios. His keyboard work has contributed to numerous film scores including You’ve Got Mail, A Chorus Line, The Object of My Affection, The Muppets Take Manhattan and the remake of Shaft. In 1990, Carter began a long association with singer/songwriter James Taylor as a member of his touring and recording band. He remained in the band through 2001, playing acoustic piano and electronic keyboards. In recent years, Carter has toured Europe with Bill Evans, performed at the Oak Room at the Algonquin with Broadway star Melissa Errico, recorded with Nashville singer/songwriter Suzy Bogus, and recorded and arranged for Kiss drummer Peter Criss. HOLIDAY BIOGRAPHIES BOB CHRISTIANSON, organ Bob Christianson is the composer, arranger and executive producer of the upcoming WTTW-PBS Special, A Christmas Carol – The Concert. It was written in collaboration with Alisa Hauser, and it will be on PBS nationwide starting December 13, 2013. It is a “dramatic concert” version of the beloved Dickens tale, using a full symphony orchestra, choir, a rock/pop rhythm section, four soloists and a narrator. It was taped before a live audience this past May at the North Shore Center For The Performing Arts in Skokie, Illinois by HMS Media of Chicago. He was honored to have the Baltimore Symphony premier A Christmas Carol – The Concert in December of 2011. This is the second of his orchestral works that has been performed by the BSO, the first being Too Hot To Handel, which he co-arranged with Gary Anderson from an original concept by Marin Alsop. His new musical, Take Me America (book and lyrics by Bill Nabel) recently had a two-month run at the prestigious Village Theatre in Seattle, which was the original home of the hit Broadway shows Next To Normal and Million Dollar Quartet. As a successful studio synthesist, he has recorded with such producers as the late, great Arif Mardin, and has recorded with such artists as Aretha Franklin, Chaka Khan, Jan Hammer, Judy Collins, Dianna Ross and Rupert Holmes. HOLIDAY BIOGRAPHIES CLINT DE GANON, drums Clint de Ganon was six years old when he began drum lessons in his hometown of Hastings-on-Hudson, New York. Classically trained, he studied percussion with New York Phil members Roland Kohloff and Buster Bailey. Before finishing high school, De Ganon was tutored by Mel Lewis, performed for Buddy Rich and Elvin Jones, and was given a pair of drumsticks by Gene Krupa himself. It wasn’t long before he became one of the most sought after drummers in New York City. To date, he’s played on over 1,000 recording sessions and 75 tours. De Ganon has worked with a long and diverse list of artists, including Billy Preston, Kid Rock, Liza Minnelli, Hiram Bullock, Christopher Cross, Orleans, Steve Tyrell, Phoebe Snow, John Tropea, Tom Scott, Edgar Winter, Bob James, The Blues Brothers, Chuck Loeb, David Pack, Linda Eder, Dionne Warwick, Mark Cohn, Art Garfunkel, Fantasia, Burt Bacharach, Christine Ebersole, Cissy Houston, Dionne Warwick, Elvis Costello, Cornell Dupree, Brook Benton, Ann-Margret, Sutton Foster, Warren Hill, Michael Franks, and the Saturday Night Live Band. Back in New York, he is currently in previews for his 12th Broadway show, Beautiful, the Carole King Musical. He just completed a workshop of the Broadway-bound, Diner, with original songs by Sheryl Crowe. De Ganon created drum parts for ten original Broadway shows, including Footloose, Hairspray, Catch Me If You Can, and Violet. He currently resides in Nyack, New York, with a golden retriever named Duncan.
MARY LOUISE BURKE, associate director, Colorado Symphony Chorus Mary Louise Burke is in her 20th season as Associate Chorus Director of the Colorado Symphony Chorus. In addition to assisting Duain Wolfe, she also prepares the chorus for the annual performances of Too Hot Too Handel and various Colorado Symphony pops concerts and special chorus projects. She is also Associate Director of the Colorado Children’s Chorale, conducting the Concert Choir and acting as vocal coach for the Chorale. With an expertise in vocal technique, Burke frequently leads seminars in vocal and choral techniques for area church and community choirs. She teaches classes in “Find Your Authentic Voice” at the University of Denver and is a popular adjudicator and clinician throughout the Rocky Mountain region. A mezzo-soprano, Burke has performed solo and recital work in the metro area and for many seasons with Central City Opera’s outreach program. She has a doctorate in voice performance and pedagogy from the University of Colorado.

COLORADO SYMPHONY CHORUS The 2013-2014 Colorado Symphony concert season marks the 30th year for the Colorado Symphony Chorus. Founded in 1984 by Duain Wolfe at the request of Gaetano Delogu, then the Music Director of the Symphony, the chorus has grown over the past three decades into a nationally respected ensemble. This outstanding chorus of over 200 volunteers — including some 15 charter members — joins the Colorado Symphony for numerous performances (more than 25 this year alone), and radio and television broadcasts, to repeat critical acclaim. The Chorus has performed at noted music festivals in the Rocky Mountain region, including the Colorado Music Festival, the Bravo! Vail Valley Music Festival and the Grand Teton Music Festival, where it performed Mahler’s Symphony No. 3 under the direction of Zubin Mehta. For over two decades, the Chorus has been featured at the world-renowned Aspen Music Festival, performing such diverse repertoire as the Bernstein Mass, Mahler’s massive Symphony No. 8, Honegger’s unique Jeanne d’Arc au bûcher (Joan of Arc at the Stake), Britten’s Peter Grimes, the Berlioz Requiem, and the epic Schoenberg Gurre~Lieder, under the baton of notable conductors Lawrence Foster, James Levine, Murry Sidlin, Leonard Slatkin, Robert Spano and David Zinman. The Colorado Symphony Chorus has appeared at select public and special events, and has collaborated with many renowned Colorado arts ensembles, including the Colorado Children’s Chorale, Central City Opera, Opera Colorado and the Cleo Parker Robinson Dance Ensemble. The chorus sang at the 1991 opening gala for the Temple Hoyne Buell Theatre; provided choral support for international opera star José Carreras; tenor Andrea Bocelli; and participated in the 1993 Papal Vigil when Pope John Paul II visited Denver. It has performed the works of a number of Colorado composers, including Samuel Lancaster and John Kuzma, and has had works written especially for it by Colorado Symphony composers-in-residence Jon Deak and Libby Larsen. The Colorado Symphony Chorus is featured on a recent NAXOS release of Roy Harris’ Symphony No. 4. In July 2009, in celebration of the 25th anniversary of the Chorus, Duain Wolfe led a three-country, two-week concert tour of Europe, presenting the Verdi Requiem in Budapest, Vienna, Litomysl and Prague, with a final presentation in Aspen. From Evergreen to Lochbuie, and Boulder to Castle Rock, singers travel each week to rehearsals and performances in Denver totaling about 80 each a year. HOLIDAY BIOGRAPHIES SCOTT O’NEIL, resident conductor This is Scott O’Neil’s eighth season with the Colorado Symphony, and his third full season as resident conductor. O’Neil maintains a strong commitment to making music of the highest quality accessible to young audiences. He served as associate conductor for the Utah Symphony, which he joined in August 2000. O’Neil has guest conducted the Houston Symphony, Houston Youth Symphony, Phoenix Symphony, Annapolis Symphony, Florida Philharmonic, Tulsa Philharmonic, Portland Symphony (Maine), the Lubbock Symphony, the Boise Philharmonic, the Salt Lake Symphony and the Columbus Symphony in Ohio. O’Neil studied piano performance at the Oberlin College Conservatory, served as the assistant conductor of the Eastman School Symphony and Philharmonia Orchestras at the Eastman School of Music, and earned a master’s degree in orchestral conducting at Rice University, where he was the director of the Campanile Orchestra, a community/university orchestra. In 1999 he served as director of orchestras at the High School for the Performing and Visual Arts in Houston, Texas. In the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by the League of American Orchestras (LAO) to conduct an orchestra comprised of members of the Los Angeles Philharmonic and advanced students from the University of Southern California in Synergy, a program created to promote young, contemporary composers. Also in the spring of 2003, O’Neil was selected by LAO to appear on the Conductor Preview with the Jacksonville Symphony. O’Neil is prominently featured with the Colorado Symphony as conductor and creator of the Inside the Score series, in addition to appearances in the Masterworks, Family, Pops and Holiday Series.
CHRISTIE HAGEMAN, soprano Soprano Christie Hageman, described as having a “lovely timbre, perfect trill, and soaring top,” is currently a resident artist at the Minnesota Opera. Appearances in the 2013/2014 season include Pamina in Minnesota Opera’s Die Zauberflöte, Micaëla in Carmen with Livermore Valley Opera, two different concerts with the Helena Symphony and in guest appearance with the Bakkan Trio, a professional chamber ensemble based in Minnesota. Hageman has also appeared with the Minnesota Opera as Anna in Nabucco, Liù in Turandot and Musetta in La Bohème. Other roles performed include Juliette in Roméo et Juliette, Contessa in Le Nozze di Figaro, Abigail Williams in The Crucible, Zerlina in Don Giovanni, Emily in Our Town and Clorinda in La Cenerentola with Opera Colorado. Hageman has previously appeared with the Colorado Symphony in their program Letters from Mozart and Colorado Christmas. Competition recognition includes awards from the Irene Dalis Competition, the Rocky Mountain Region of the Metropolitan Opera National Council Auditions, and first place in the Denver Lyric Opera Guild competition in 2010. Hageman graduated with her masters of music degree from CU Boulder and while taking a year off, fulfilled her duties as Miss Montana 2006 traveling her home state and speaking to students with the platform “Music Makes the Difference.” PROGRAM 12 SOUNDINGS 2013/14 | COLORADOSYMPHONY.ORG
