The rig counts are down from just a few years ago, yet oil and gas output are WAY up. U.S. crude oil yearly production in the Federal Gulf of Mexico (GOM) set a new annual high of 1.6 million barrels per day (b/d) in 2016, breaking the previous record set in 2009 by 44,000 b/d. In January 2017, GOM crude oil production increased for the fourth consecutive month, reaching 1.7 million barrels per day (b/d).

These offshore oil and gas platforms are a major stable source of oil and natural gas to the United States since they are inside U.S. territorial waters. The western and central Gulf of Mexico oil regions are divded up into districts. These include the Lake Jackson District off of Texas, the Lake Charles, Lafayette, and Houma Districts off of Louisiana and the New Orlean District off of Mississippi and Alabama.

According to the Energy Information Administration(EIA), the Gulf of Mexico offshore oil/natural gas accounts for 17% of total U.S. crude oil output and the offshore natural gas production in the Gulf accounts for 5% of total U.S. production. And about 45% of total U.S. petroleum refining capacity is located along the Gulf Coast in major refinery cities of Houston, Port Arthur, Beaumont, Lake Charles, Baton Rouge, and New Orleans. A total of 51% of U.S. natural gas processing plant capacity is also in these areas.

Major gulf oil and gas fields include Atlantis Oil Field, Eugene Island block 330 oil field, and the newly discovered Tiber oilfield. Notable large and famous oil platforms include Bullwinkle, Baldpate, Mad Dog, Magnolia, Mars, Petronius, and Thunder Horse. Notable individual oulf oil wells include Jack Two and Knotty Head.
