In the ever-evolving landscape of digital connections and companionship, the concept of artificial intelligence (AI) girlfriends is making waves, prompting both intrigue and concern among observers. A recent encounter shared by Greg Isenberg, CEO of Late Checkout, shed light on a burgeoning trend where individuals are turning to AI technology to fulfill their emotional and companionship needs.

Isenberg recounted an encounter with a 24-year-old man in Miami who openly admitted to spending a staggering $10,000 per month on "AI girlfriends."

"Some people play video games, I play with AI girlfriends," the guy from Miami told Isenberg. He also said per Isenberg that he uses voice notes to chat with his AI girlfriends and even customises them based on his likes and dislikes. "It's comfort at the end of the day," the man said.

Isenberg believes that this growing trend could lead to a Match Group like business of AI girlfriends worth over $1 billion. Match Group is the parent company of dating apps such as Tinder, Match.com, Hinge, OkCupid and Plenty of Fish and reportedly has a market capitalisation of $9 billion.

As for digital romance, there are several platforms like Romantic AI, Forever Companion, Nomi.ai and Soulmate that encourage forging relationships with virtual partners. The Miami man revealed that he prefers Candy.AI and Kupid.AI.

There has been a rise in young adults leaning toward AI relationships considering the rise in loneliness over the years. Citing a 2023 Meta-Gallup survey, CNN reported that nearly 1 in 4 adults across the world said they feel lonely. The survey was carried out across 142 countries. Loneliness is likely to be a big reason for the growing business of the sex robot industry which is currently worth about $200 million, The Guardian reported.
