The New York Genealogical and Biographical Society, popularly known as the "G & B," was founded in 1869. As a non-profit educational institution, our purpose is to collect and make available information on genealogy, biography and history, particularly as it relates to the people of New York State. To carry out our purpose, we maintain one of the principal genealogical reference libraries in the United States, publish periodicals and books, conduct educational programs and provide other services. Our Library's collection of published material — more than 75,000 volumes including family genealogies (more than 11,000); U.S., state, and local histories; biographies; genealogy and history periodicals; reference materials ("how to conduct research," "where to find the sources"); and indexes to genealogical and biographical books and periodicals — is open to the general public. For nearly 400 years, New York has been known for the diversity of its people. Whether your ancestors were among the first Europeans or Africans who came to New Netherland, or the Native Americans who were already living here, or whether they were among the long stream of immigrants from all over the world who came in the subsequent years, the G & B is here to help you learn more about those ancestors and the world in which they lived.
