    About the Business

On July 1, 1918 a meeting of the Greek Orthodox faithful took place in the town of Canonsburg, PA. The purpose of the meeting was to establish a Greek Orthodox Church. Present at this historic meeting were eighty-three men. The majority of those present were from Karpathos, Crete, Rhodes, Patmos, Ikaria, Samos and Epiros. On July 7, 1918 the community elected Mr. Michael Kontos the first president. Officers were elected and a Parish Council was formed. On July 25, 1918 a hall was rented for the purpose of conducting church services and the first priest to serve was the Rev. K. Liakopoulos. In the year 1925, August 23rd, a church was purchased from the Ukranian Greek Catholic Community. The All Saints Greek Orthodox Church had a permanent house of worship. The president during this period was Michael Pihakis. One of the main features of the All Saints Church is the Iconostasion that divides the Altar from the main Naos. This beautiful work of art was built by a special craftsman from the town of Koskinou, Rhodes. Also with its outstanding twin bell towers piercing the heights, the Church could be easily seen from a distance in the heart of East End Canonsburg where most of the Greek community resided. In 1937 His Eminence Archbishop Athenagoras came to the community to dedicate the Grecian Hall. The Grecian Hall became the focal point for all of our activities. It served as a Greek School. All the celebration and festivities took place in this beautiful two story building.…

      First to Review

This review is limited to the Greek food festival being held here this week. This is my first Greek food festival and certainly won't be my last!

The festival is held on the grounds and inside the basement of All Saints Greek Orthodox Church in Canonsburg, PA. Their menu is available on line. Everything with the exception of bread and a few store bought desserts are made by the ladies of this parish from scratch. The bread comes from Mediterra bakery in Robinson which I've always been pleased with.

Upon entry they have a tent set up with a limited number of menu items from their ala carte menu. Basically set up as a fast grab and go, if you want something like a lamb burger, there is a large tent directly to the left of it for covered picnic style dining. Surrounding that dining area ladies are selling various merchandise some of which is church related and others your typical festival items such as pins and bracelets.

They have clear cut directions to the main dining area inside where you have access to the full menu. The layout is excellent. One side is for your main courses, the other side is for your desserts. Next to the desserts is your beverage station where you can get anything from bottled water, soda, or alcoholic beverages and beer. In the middle are plenty of tables where you can sit. Parking is on the church property. Overflow parking is on the hill on the street after entering their lot

Again it is set up for either eat in or grab and go. The dinner menu posted is available all day and prices are very reasonable. I picked up a tray and as I worked my way down the line learned what the various dishes were to help me decide. I chose to go ala carte and purchased the moussaka, spanakopita, a side of green beans, and a piece of bread. My total came to $9.00!! Not bad for a full meal.

The moussaka was made out of layered eggplant, potato, and meat with Bechamel sauce. It was very good but a little cold which I suspect because it had been sitting out. Still I loved every bite of it. The spanakopita consisted of filo dough with a seasoned mixture of spinach and cheeses. Again this was outstanding! Even the Greek style green beans were delicious!

Now it was onto desserts. While I was told the rice pudding was not to be missed one of the ladies talked me into Kataifi which is shredded filo layered with nuts and topped with honey syrup. She had made it herself so I invested $1.50 for that. Believe me I was blown away again! It was so good!! I wanted to take some rice pudding home with me but since it contained milk and I had other things to do wasn't sure it would last. As I had mentioned all Greek desserts are made in house, your typical cookies and sweets you are familiar with are not. They do have quite a selection!

In addition to the food they offer church tours at various times of the day. I had just missed the 1:00 one and the next one wasn't until late afternoon. The church's gift shop was open which gave me an opportunity to browse and see what items they sell that is unique to their beliefs. It was a very impressive shop.

At night they have a live band along with Greek dancers each evening. Credit cards are accepted as well as cash. While the festival only lasts a week hopefully I will try to make it back to try some of their other offerings. The lamb kebab looked delicious and someone who was eating one told me she really enjoyed it.

I was so glad to enjoy homemade Greek food at such reasonable prices. The church is located off I-79 south at the Southpointe exit and an easy drive for about 2 miles to W. McMurray Road in Canonsburg.

I was told of this gem of a situation today so, I went. Being a visitor, I'm always open to try the local fare. I called ahead and made my order ($62 worth). I drove there, was greeted by a really sweet young kid, who directed me through a maze of cones to a covered area. I gave the ladies (and young girls) my ticket number and had to drive back to my place, smelling the wonderful food awaiting me...Folks, I had the
