Buchanan Field
The Maryland Province of Jesuits gives its total commitment to Gonzaga as a school serving the inner city of Washington. As a tangible sign of courage and determination, the school obtained its playing field in 1973. The field was named after one of Gonzaga's loyal alumni families, The Buchanan Family. To make room for Buchanan Field, the dilapidated housing in the block across the road from the school was torn down, and the residents were rehoused in the Sursum Corda center two blocks north of Gonzaga. Fr. Horace McKenna, S.J., a famous Gonzaga Jesuit, was highly instrumental in the project. Indeed, there is a street named after him there. The residents had better housing, and the school had Buchanan Field. As Gonzaga's legendary Coach Joe Kozik once said, for the first time in 100 years, Gonzaga could play a home game. Eye Street lacrosse made its debut on Buchanan Field in the Spring of 1990 when the Eagles defeated Good Counsel. The program has continued those winning ways, making Buchanan Field one of the toughest places for visiting teams to play. As part of The Greater Glory, Gonzaga's first-ever capital campaign, the varsity locker rooms in Dooley Hall were completely renovated. The first-class facility includes new lockers and a state-of-the-art training room, not only for Gonzaga's lacrosse players but for all Eye Street athletes.
