There's a New Ghostbusters Movie Coming in 2020

Also: Steve Carell is making a Space Force show for Netflix, and Apple is teaming up with Sofia Coppola and Bill Murray.

Another Thursday, another installment of The Monitor, WIRED's roundup of the latest in the world of culture. But this Thursday is much busier than most. Why? Well, there's a new Ghostbusters movie in the works from Jason Reitman (son of the original's director), Apple is adding some big names to its initiative to make original content, and Steve Carell is working on a Netflix show about Space Force. Yes, Space Force!

A New Ghostbusters Movie Is Coming

First and foremost, here's a thing we didn't expect to be saying on the internet in 2019: There's a new Ghostbusters movie on the horizon. Yes, it's true. Ivan Reitman, who directed the 1984 original, is producing, and his son, Jason (Juno, Up in the Air), will cowrite and direct. No plot details are available yet, but it will take place in the same universe that the original proton-pack-wielding, ghostbusting foursome saved back in the 1980s. The film, which already has a teaser, is scheduled to hit theaters in summer 2020. Start working on your "Who ya gonna call?" jokes now.

Space Force? Space Force!

Ready for some good news? Twitter's go-to snack Steve Carell and his Office collaborator Greg Daniels are reuniting. Ready for some even better news? They're going to make a show for Netflix inspired by Space Force, the sixth branch of the military that President Trump called for last summer. Carell and Daniels are cocreating the series, which is set to be a workplace comedy about getting a space military off the ground. Carell will star. Hey, if the world can have Star Wars and "Star Wars" then surely we can have Space Force and Space Force, amirite?

More Creators Added to Apple's Bushel

Meanwhile, over at another media company, Apple is slowly adding to its roster of originals producers. First up, the company will coproduce a film with A24 called On the Rocks, which will be directed by Sofia Coppola and star her Lost in Translation lead Bill Murray. Next, the company also reportedly signed an overall deal with TV showrunner Jason Katims (Friday Night Lights). Apple already has Jennifer Aniston and Reese Witherspoon (and Steve Carell, too!). Who's next?
