Police in Hendersonville, Tenn., are continuing the investigation into Monday morning's (Oct. 25) shooting death of singer Gary Allan's wife, but a preliminary ruling from Tennessee State Medical Examiner Dr. Bruce Levy supports initial reports that the wound was self-inflicted.

"A preliminary ruling from the state medical examiner's staff is that the death is the result of a single, self-inflicted gunshot wound," Hendersonville Police Chief David L. Key said Monday afternoon.

Police were called to the singer's Nashville-area home Monday at 1:20 a.m., to find that Allan's wife, Angela L. Herzberg, 36, had apparently shot herself. Allan's legal name is Gary Allan Herzberg.

Additional forensic examinations are continuing that "may require days or weeks," the police chief said.

The couple married in 2001 and moved to Hendersonville from Huntington Beach, Calif., in 2003. They have six children from their previous marriages.

Allan's record label, MCA Nashville, confirmed the death Monday morning and said in a written statement, "We ask for your prayers for Angela's family and friends and especially for the children during this unimaginable time in their lives."

Allan has cancelled a series of tour dates, including a Thursday (Oct. 28) show in Portland, Maine, and weekend concerts in Uncasville, Conn., and Burgettstown, Pa. The CMA had announced Monday that Allan would serve as a presenter at the CMA Awards on Nov. 9.
