About
This historic castle was constructed on three islands and is surrounded by lake and beautiful gardens. Frederiksborg Castle has housed The Museum of National History since 1878. A tour through the museum's many beautiful rooms is an encounter with kings, queens, nobles, the bourgeois, events, and epochs, which have all shaped the country's history and development from the Middle Ages to the 21st century. The museum was founded by brewer J.C. Jacobsen, the founder of Carlsberg.

- Ag12317 contributionsAbsolutely amazingI was considering skipping the visit since we did not have much time, so I am so glad we did go. The castle has absolutely amazing chambers with stunning ceilings and a remarkable hall leading from one room to the other. I was also impressed with the chapel. A real gem.Visited June 2023Written 26 June 2023
- Gerda MSon en Breugel, The Netherlands103 contributionsGreatest barok castle ever!We had a great visit in this castle! The barok interieur is overwhelmingly beautiful !! Almost too much … Every room had fantastic ceilings ! All of them non equal to the previous. Every room had many great paintings, lovely furniture … beautiful ! The trip was guided trough it the castle, there was an app to have exces to more information but that did not work great with my IPhone. We wanted to visit the gardens as well, but there was not enough time for that. The tour had to be followed in one direction and took up all of our time. We have to return for the gardens another time.Visited June 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 1 July 2023
- GAR243 contributionsBeautiful but overwhelmingThis castle is stunning both inside and outside, beautiful architecture and decor. It takes a long time to walk around everything, and I found that the focus of the audio guide on the paintings slightly boring after the first hour. This castle is still worth a visit thoughVisited May 2023Travelled soloWritten 15 July 2023
- Justine28Yellowknife, Canada2,093 contributionsTruly impressive castle, but takes a long time to see itVisited this beautiful castle in mid June. Other than the impressive halls/ rooms and all the interesting art and furniture pieces in the museum, you can also enjoy really nice baroque gardens and a boat ride that’s available from outside of the castle. The audio guide through Smartify App did not work for us at all, it was picking wrong pieces all the time, and we gave up after some time. The inner courtyard façade of the building is currently under renovation. Parking was available just outside the main gardens; there’s quite a large free parking lot next to residential area. The town with a few restaurants and shops is only a few minutes walk from the castle. Very impressive castle and visit, all in all. We didn’t expect it but it took us 4 hours to see the castle and its grounds/gardens (didn’t take the boat tour as it was too late).Visited June 2023Written 21 July 2023
- BigMerkGlasgow, United Kingdom2,304 contributionsAwesome visit - great presentation of well preserved roomsWe visited here on a tour from our cruise ship. It looked Greta from outside but it was once inside that it really shone. We visited the large church inside the castle as well as the Great Hall (where kids could, try on period style clothes and pose for photos), the ballroom, dining rooms and bedrooms. Each room was well furnished and well decorated. Our tour guide was extremely knowledgable about it all. Well worth a visitVisited July 2023Travelled with friendsWritten 23 July 2023
- Dharmateja C VValby, Denmark1 contributionOnly one word phenomenalWhat a wonderful place. It is one of the best Castles. You can feel the Royal elegance. There are nearly 60+ rooms to visit. They provide an audio device for a guided tour. Visit in the Summer to experience the beautiful Gardens. Boat ride around the castle was awesome.Visited August 2023Travelled as a coupleWritten 12 August 2023
- MNowosadSan Jose, California179 contributionsMagnificent Royal Danish CastleFrederiksborg Castle is a former Royal Danish residence, just 1-hour (by train) from Copenhagen. The castle grounds are already impressive, but the indoor tour allows you to see many beautiful salons and rooms, with a lot of history and fascinating artifacts and furniture. It is definitively worthy to take a morning or afternoon of your stay in Copenhagen to visit this castle.Visited May 2023Written 14 August 2023
- Coryy20Port of Spain, Trinidad4,837 contributionsSimply outstandingFrederiksborg castle is in Hillerod, Denmark. It wa built in the 17th century for the former king. It is one of the most famous castles in Denmark and is located on three islands. The castle is home to the museum of National history. As previously mentioned, it is simply gorgeous. A definite must-see when in Copenhagen.Visited November 2022Travelled soloWritten 24 August 2023
- HelmutKirkland, Washington4,939 contributionsThe Versailles of DenmarkWhile the castle is a bit outside of town and you have to drive (unsure about public transport), if you are interested in Danish history this place is a must. It is quite large, built over several centuries and has an extensive art collection. The space is quite luxurious and absolutely magnificent.Definitely worth heading out of town.Visited September 2023Travelled on businessWritten 9 September 2023
- Nicolette D8 contributionsAmazingThis castle is so amazing! It takes you through several centuries of Danish history with a modern art exhibit on the third floor. It is easy to get to by train. The grounds are also beautiful. Highly recommend leaving time to walk around the lake.Visited September 2023Travelled soloWritten 13 September 2023

A crowning jewel regarding Denmark's royal history.
Impressive in size and location, a must if you want to see just how relevant the Danish monarchy was at a time

Loved the self-guided tour of the castle and the gardens. Plenty of information was provided by scanning the QR code at the entrance and accessing the information about each room through your phone.
Each room is rich with history and exquisite works of art work depicting the royals that ruled Denmark over many years.
One of the most fascinating parts of the tour was getting up close and personal with many of the original sculptures that used to be afixed to the castle.
Plan to spend 3 to 4 hours at the castle to do it proper justice. It is also just a short walk into town to visit some of the local shops and grab lunch at one of the many cafés.
All of the docents that we encountered on the property were extremely friendly and helpful. I would recommend this castle over many of the others in the area.
Tip: A free parking area is available by entering Batzkes Bakke in your GPS.

Our tour continued to Frederiksborg Castle. In the Nordic region, it is considered one of the largest Renaissance residences. Although it is no longer occupied by royalty, the history surrounding this castle is fascinating. Several grand palaces were constructed by the order of King Christian IV, a respected ruler who named the property for his father, Fredrick II, who built an original structure on the site. When there was absolute monarchy, it is stated that Danish kings were anointed at Frederiksborg Castle Chapel and still considered The Chapel of the Royal Danish Orders of Knighthood.
Seated on three islands, this famous castle boasts of beauty, a lake, and a vast garden. When the family departed the castle due to a fire in 1859, the location was restored and now is used as a museum thanks to the museum founder and financier J.C. Jacobsen and the Carlsberg Foundation.
We had a two-hour time frame that was also split with an hour for lunch. I focused on the key rooms in the castle to visit so that I could return to our tour bus on time. Frederiksborg requires more than one hour to fully explore the wealth and beauty of this castle that comprises both the Museum of National History and the Danish National Portrait Gallery.
Last minute note, dining at Café Valentin was well worth it. The food was hot with hearty portions. The best hot chocolate here will be hard to match anywhere.

Beautiful castle located not far from Copenhagen - about a 45 minute train ride from the central station. The scenario is quite stunning, and in summer time is probably even better. The tour inside the castle is also quite interesting, going through the history of Denmark's monarchy.

We toured the castle on November 11, 2023. The castle is easy to get to from Copenhagen by taking the metro to Copenhagen Central Station and get on the S-Tog A (blue) to Hillerød station. It is about a 10-to-15-minute walk through Hillerød (which has a number of nice shops and restaurants). The castle is impressive from the outside and you can spend a good amount of time before entering the castle. There is a reasonable fee to enter the castle. The castle is massive and you could spend the entire open to close touring it. A lot of Danish history is here and the majority of artifacts are in excellent shape. We had a good time, and it was well with the trip.

We took the train from Copenhagen Central which was a easy ride, then we walked the 20 min from Hillerod station to the castle. We arrived at 10 am for opening so not to many tourist which we liked. The castle did not disappoint, I am so happy that we took the day to spend at Frederiksborg to see how the other side lived.lol Afterwards we walked around the town of Hillerod and had lunch, which I would recommend, it was a day well spent. I would say you do not need to book a tour do it on your own at your own pace.

This historical castle is splendid both inside and outside. The Great Hall is magnificent. Its ceiling and walls are well decorated and painted. The chapel is gorgeous. The altar, pipe organ and pulpit are ornate. The gardens are beautiful and the view of the castle across the lake is spectacular!

Visited here on our two week road trip of Denmark with family and a friend. I have been here on numerous occasions, but this was a first time for my friend. Walked through each of the grandiose rooms gazing at the wall hangings and ceilings. Did not visit the gardens this time due to the time of year (and the rain).

Do I have to join a tour or will the Copenhagen Care be good enough for entry?
Colette
Richmond, Canada14 contributions
Not sure what Copenhagen Care is, but we just booked a train ride up and was at the castle when it opened. Bought the tickets on the spot, just the two of us with no problems.
Can I leave my suitcase at lockers or cloak room?
DNM
Hillerod, Denmark
At the museum we have lockers for your luggage. Only small bags will be allowed inside the museum and we kindly ask guests to place their bags in front of them, so they don´t touch the paintings and furniture by accident.
We hope you will enjoy your visit!
With the Copenhagen card did you get into Frederiksborg castle right away or were you assigned a time slot for entry later in the day? We're also coming in via train and are concerned about the time.
