Your experience in Prague will never be complete if you do not see it from the top. Hillsides, stretched from the west to the north, provide spectacular views of greenish copper cupolas, narrow cobblestone streets, bridges connecting both river banks and green gardens from red-roof tops of centuries-old houses. Prague pulls you into its 1300 year old history. Walking up the hill or stairs to Prague Castle, the historical seat of Czech rulers and the majestic Saint Vitus Cathedral can leave you speechless (and out of breath). Luckily, plenty of terrace cafés overlooking gardens and beautiful parks are available to provide rest and a place to catch your breath again.

    Overpriced place
I have long wanted to get to this street in the castle, but it's not so easy. I had to buy a general ticket, which, among other things, gives the right to visit her and return here again through the entire castle. Here are the houses where the castle guards used to be. Now each of them houses either a museum exposition or the interior of a house. Liked the exhibition of medieval armor and weapons, the torture chamber and the alchemist's house. I'm not a big fan of museums, especially the overcrowded ones, standing with people in a queue for a long time in tight corridors, especially in the context of COVID-19. I am much more interested in the facades of houses. To do this, you do not need to buy a ticket, it is enough to wait for 5 pm, when you can get on the street for free and with fewer people.

    Picturesque Street at the Castle
Miniature houses. Beautifully restored picturesque street, after it was pretty much falling apart during the communist era. Now painted in pastel colors and lovingly restored inside, it gives one a glimpse of how people used to live, centuries ago. Mostly workers at the castle, goldsmiths, metal workers and guards. It Is fascinating, how they were able to adapt to these tiny, low ceiling spaces , where the bed took most of the space. Washing in the washbasin, bringing water in from outside. Some of the houses were converted into gift shops. They had nice pewter selection and handmade quilts for babies. We did purchase few things, liking the fact that they were Czech crafted, not cheaply made imports. Yes , there is an entry fee, ticket can be purchased as a combo ticket for the castle area. I do think that it helps to control the crowds during the prime hours of the day. The good news is, that after 5pm you can enter for free . The houses close up at that hour, but you can see the outside .... The house #22 is a house where the famous writer Franz Kafka wrote one of his books.

A must do when you visit Prague
During a 4 day city trip to Prague we visited the Golden lane, a must do when you're in Prague. In house 11 Franz Kafka wrote one of his notorious books. It's located just behind the St Vitus cathedral. They try to charge you 250 CZK per person, but if you go there after 4 PM, it's free entrance ...

    Old but not so old
A narrow, cobbled street, located along a portion of the wall of the Prague castle. In the vaults of the defensive walls a series of tiny houses were built by the former castle guards. The area looks like a dwarf town, with its tiny houses. Its name comes from the goldsmiths who lived here, in 17th century. The current appearance of the street is much more recent, from the 19th century, when the area was rehabilitated. Upstairs is an exhibition of medieval weapons and armors, very interesting. Several houses have been arranged as a museum, to give back the lifestyle of those who have lived in them lately: the dressmaker, the pharmacist, the innkeeper, the guard. Others were arranged as small souvenirs and craft shops. Upstairs is an exhibition of medieval weapons and armors, very interesting. Also, there is a small café. Access is included in the combined ticket which also allows access to St Vitus Cathedral, Old Royal Palace, St. George's Basilica and Daliborka tower.

Little gem of the Prague Castle
The Golden Lane is a small street, part of the Prague Castle complex. Although at the beginning the area accommodated the castle guards, after years, goldsmiths established their residences and business here. Nowadays the small houses are organized as small museums recreating the former workshops and shops. Some of them are now souvenir shops. After 5pm you may visit the place at no cost.

    Interesting
Once visting the cathedral and the castle, you shouldn't miss this little street. The entrance is included in the ticket for the castle, so you should also go there, when you already have the ticket, especially, there are no extra tickets for the street. There is a big weapon museum (old weapons) and the everyday life of past time is shown there. I esppecially remember the little cinema room, where they show old posters and films. Also some shops are there. At the end, tehre is an old prison (museum). With the exit, you leave also the castle area.

    Picturesque street but very crowded
The Golden Lane originated after the construction of a new northern wall of the Castle. The area of the northern bailey was used for the building of modest dwellings, which are now the last remainder of the small-scale architecture of Prague Castle. They were inhabited by defenders of the Castle, servants or for example goldsmiths and the Castle marksmen. The tiny houses were occupied until World War II, but already during the period of the First Republic, care was taken to ensure that the picturesque character of the Lane was not changed in the course of modifications. From 1916 to 1917 house No. 22 was inhabited by the writer Franz Kafka. There is an entrancefee, some houses are shops and some a little museum. After 17.00 o'clock you have free entrance. Be prepared that you are not the only tourist here, very crowded. Nice to see whilst you visit the Castle.

    Adorable houses
If you are already visiting the Prague castle, this little lane of tiny houses should not be missed. Normally you would need to buy a ticket, but the lane is free if you go after 5pm. There will be a lot less crowds during that time too, because it really is a small area. The houses themselves are tiny, and they have been turned into souvenir shops. The Franz Kafka house is number 22.

    WALK DOWN GOLDEN LANE
On our tour of the castle we then walked down Golden Lane. This is a narrow street with old houses that have turned into mini museums replicating what they one were. All types of trade are shown there. Some of the original houses are now actually trading as shops ( essentially for tourists ). It like you are taken back in time to years gone by and you wonder what life would have been like. At the exit there is a dungeon/ torture room. Quite a few gruesome machinery was used to extract information from a prisoner. One didn't make it and the skeleton is still in the cage.

We had read a lot about Golden Lane. Disappointed but only due to the crowds. Some of the little homes you can only get a couple of people in at a time so we missed a lot as it was so busy. Still recommend seeing if included in the ticket but wouldn't make a special journey.

I loved Golden Lane. Such a beautiful and quaint part of the castle. Gorgeous little houses full of history. A few cute tourist shops to explore too. It is however very narrow and one of the busiest places in the castle, so there are a lot of people. Perhaps go early or later in the day. We went when it arrived and it wasn’t too bad.

You cannot miss it if you visit the entire Prague Castle complex. It is very interesting to see that tiny houses and going back in that period. Unfortunately it becomes very easy too crowded and it’s difficult to move around and see all the houses. But there are some beautiful boutiques there where you can buy nice souvenirs. I personally recommend the armoire exhibition.

Golden Lane is such a wonderful place. Bit hidden from the usual tourist trail, it is easy to miss. But do visit, because those small houses, small doors...everything looks so tiny, almost like a hobbit dwelling. It looks like it has been recently restored to original glory and it simply looks amazing. Our favorite place in Prague to visit.

We saw the main 3 attractions in the castle complex. This seemed to be the least amazing so we figured do this last, if we didn't feel anything we could leave. We spent as much time just in the Golden Lane as the remaining complex. I don't know about the 1 star reveiw I can see to the right while I'm writing this, but they must NOT have been paying attention to the attraction. I don't remember the stores or their prices. Upstairs, hidden above that is the amazing part of this section. Armor from who even knows where. Armor designed for apparent children, alongside full grown adult armor. There's a weapons display with things I'd NEVER imagined being feasible to design or build based on the dates. Shield with a gun in the center. Axes with guns. The detail and engravings are so detailed. Swords and knives dated 1000-750BC! Wait, so they're between 2500-3000 years old!??!!?? I smile every time I get to talk about Golden Lane! Or now typing this still smiling.

Really interesting insight into the history of Prague and the area around the castle. The Lane is a series of very old building and each has a fascinating story. The armoury, torture chambers and herbalist are particularly eye catching.

If you are visiting the castle, I recommend visiting Golden Lane. It is a cute little lane full of old small houses now turned into shops and exhibits. If you are not visiting the castle, then this is probably not worth the effort.

I recognize that it's very beautiful and I recommend the visit... if you can pass.
An old man at the entrance should not pass to my father, who is 71 years old and according to the tourist office, could pass free (in fact, he could pass to the rest of the castle complex). Respectfully I asked why couldn't pass and he started to insult us in czech. Besitos that, the same man allowed the pass to the woman who was at the same situation.
It's a shame to find this kind of "people" in such a beautiful places :(

The Golden Lane entrance is part for the Castle basic tour ticket. It is a very well preserved street, with tiny houses displaying the life of their various inhabitans: defenders of the Castle, servants, goldsmiths or the Castle marksmen. On the street there is a house which was inhabited by a fortune teller in the 2nd WW. At the end of the street, there is a staircase that leads to a former prisone, where torture devices and eapons are displayed.
