Recently, we were surprised to learn that a sequel to the 1994 Danish horror film Nightwatch would soon be hitting Shudder. That film, which starred Nikolaj Coster-Waldau, was later given an English language remake starring Ewan McGregor, but it’d been years since we’d thought about either film. And now, after all this time, original writer/director Ole Bornedal had gone and shot a sequel! With Coster-Waldau, no less! Sometimes, life offers up a fun surprise.

Anyway, today we’re getting our first look at the film’s trailer, ahead of its May 17th premiere on Shudder. Let’s take a look…

Well that looks intense, doesn’t it? Here’s an official plot synopsis, should you like one:

“22-year-old medical student Emma (Fanny Leander Bornedal) has just taken a job as the night watch in the same forensic department where her parents were once almost killed by the famed psychopathic police inspector Wörmer. The events led to her mother’s suicide, and her father Martin (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) has turned to tranquilizers to suppress the memories. Determined to investigate what exactly happened to them, Emma tracks down and confronts Wörmer, only to unintentionally reawaken his bloodthirst and ignite a violent revenge on everyone who sealed his destiny years ago.”

Yes, the Nightwatch sequel has gone generational, with Coster-Waldau’s daughter filling the same role that he filled in the original. That’s an intriguing way to get back to this material, and what a coup to get Coster-Waldau back in that particular role. We may not have seen this sequel coming, but we’re excited to check it out!

Once again, Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever will hit Shudder on May 17th. You’ve got until then to get yourself reacquainted with the original, folks!
