The kingdom of kush was located inbetween the Red Sea and the Nile river. The location was not random. It was very influencial in helping the kingdom evolvethe way that it did. The reason the kingdom was able to flourish so long in this location was for two main reasons:
1) The land in this area was extremely fertile and,
2) The area was protected by the Sahara Desert.
Firstly, the reason for the fertility was the fact that the Nile river would flood every year. This deposited huge amounts of nutrience into the soil. for this reason, Agriculture was on of the main sources of income for the people of kush. One of the most important places for agriculteure in the Kingdom of Kush was at Karmahther. This was the location of a very large basin the would fill up with water during the floods. this water would be used to water crops, and for irrigational purposes. In comparason to much of the land to the west of the kingdom of kush, which was all desert, this area provided a contrast which was very desirable for people to inhabit.
The fact that the Sahara desert kept the kingdom of kush isolated had a huge impact on the way it developed. The isolation allowed for unique cultural traits and arcitectual techniques to devolpe that were different compared to those of Egypt and West Aftrica. The desert also protected the area from being taken over as a result of military conquests. It was protected on one side by the Red sea, and the other side by the Sahara. only once in the kingdoms extensive history was the area captured by the Egyptians.
