Banega’s journey began in 2000, and stayed with the youth program till 2007, before he went to the first team when he was 18 years of age. He won recognition immediately, due to the passing average he established, besides his displays in Primera División. Despite his young age, he got compared to club veterans, and was highly appreciated for his performances. He debuted professionally in a 2007 match that ended in a victory of 4–0 over Club Atlético Banfield in February. In April, he received an ovation when he was just a few games old.

In May 2016, Banega’s plan to join Internazionale was announced and he would be a free agent, and the shift was put into effect in July. His official debut was in August for the team. He debuted in Serie A in August 2016, in a 0–2 defeat against A.C. ChievoVerona. In September, he assisted Mauro Icardi’s first goal in a 2–1 success against Pescara, and helped earn the season’s first three points. He was a member of the squad that participated in Inter’s Europa League. He first goal was in October, in a 1–2 defeat to A.S. Roma.

At the beginning of the campaign, Banega appeared in most games, but was often seen on the bench too, leading to speculations regarding a possible winter move.
