Ethan Hawke and Daughter Maya Proudly Debut Their First Movie Together in New York City

Maya stars in and executive-produced 'Wildcat,' which was co-written and directed by Ethan

Ethan Hawke and his daughter Maya Hawke are celebrating a rare milestone together!

The father-daughter duo attended a screening of their first film project together on Thursday, April 11 at the Angelika Film Center in New York City.

Ethan, 53, directed and co-wrote Wildcat which stars Maya, 25, as writer Flannery O'Connor in the 1940s and 1950s, when she was in her 20s and struggling to get her first novel, Wise Blood published. O'Connor, who died in 1964, was also diagnosed with lupus during this time in her life.

The Stranger Things star and Boyhood actor coordinated outfits on their big night, with him wearing a blue suit and her pairing a blue jacket with a mesh skirt.

The Hawkes were joined at the screening by Ethan's wife Ryan and other stars of the film like Laura Linney, who plays O'Connor's mother Regina.

"Anybody that knows Maya knows that she's a force,” the Training Day star said of his daughter when PEOPLE exclusively premiered the trailer of Wildcat on March 13.

"She always has been, Ethan added. "She writes and performs her own music and she loves acting and she loves painting and she's kind of an artistic animal.”

In the interview, he reflected on why he thought the actress and musician wanted to portray O'Connor.

"I think she saw in Flannery's experience a real challenge — a real difficult portrait of a person worth talking about, and I think the actor in her saw. 'Oh wow. I'd like to play her,’ and because I come at directing it as an actor, that really excites me," Ethan said.

"I think it was a thrill for us to collaborate with all the people in the production. So many people were so gifted around us and it was just fun to be in a band together," he added about their experience working on the Wildcat set together.

Wildcat is in theaters on May 3. The movie made its world premiere at the Telluride Film Festival last fall.
