    Interesting Tour
Must see in Key West. The guided tour was very interesting. It gets a little crowded so the best time to go may be first thing in the morning or at the end of the day. Hemingway was an interesting character!

Much better than I thought it would be
Tour was recommended by a friend. Frankly I wasn’t sure I was up for a guided tour in a crowded house on a hot day but decided to give it a go. Glad I did. Several points to note: a) our guide was Sarah and she was excellent - know the facts and kept it light and fun and encouraged the group to stay on longer and tour by ourselves if we wanted to get into more details, b) tour is only 30 mins long and provides enough insight to make you want to spend some additional time at the house, c) fun seeing all the cats (and I am not a big cat lover), d) fans in the rooms provide sufficient cooling and e) it’s cash only (was $18 per person when we were there), f) even though it seemed crowded at the gate it wasn’t too crowded inside.

    **A Key West Must See**
We ended our Caribbean cruise in Florida with a 4 day stay in Ft Lauderdale and a day trip to Key West. It's a 4 hour drive, but when you're a Hemingway fan, you gotta go see the Hemingway Home And Museum. A tour lasts about an hour. The tour guides are very knowledgeable of Hemingway's life and want you to ask questions. There is a sense of pride in showing off artifacts and pictures and the cats throughout the home. I really enjoyed it and consider this trip crossed off on my small bucket list!

    The Old Man and the....cats?
The guided tour was a bit pricey, but worth it. I have a degree in writing and am a Hemingway fan for decades, and still learned details from his life that I was unaware of. Go early, because there is no a/c during most of the tour.

    Absolutely take the guided tour!
We had an amazing time! I knew I wanted to go, but was overwhelmed by how awesome it was. It's 100% worth the trip! I'm normally a self guided kind of girl, but we waited for the tour and were not disappointed! Our guide was fantastic! She was knowledgeable and hilarious! She made the experience amazing! 10/10 would recommend and would go back!

Great insight to an American Classic
This was our third visit. It is a wonderful museum and perfectly preserved. The guided tour (included) points out many significant items that represent Hemingway’s life, humor and satire. My favs are the cats with extra toes, the last penny H said his wife had squandered when she took out his boxing court and installed the biggest (still) private pool in KY, and the cat fountain (a horizontal urinal).

    Wonderful
We loved the Hemingway House - especially seeing all the cats lounging around us. Six-toed cats! Our guide, Scott (I believe) was amazing and very informative. They only take cash but the admission price even at $18 a person was worth it. Take your time and mosey around the impressive house and outdoor settings, pet a few cats, and emerge yourself in history.

    Interesting view of a legend
This is a walk I tour and you will need cash as they don’t take cards ( but they do in the shop! ) - guided tour worth doing although you will need to go through again to see everything ( where I noticed our tour guide missed some bits of trivia that other guides were saying but guess they all have their own style). I am not a cat person but they were quite sweet and the six toes story is fun ( although definite smell of cat wee in places !!). Quite pricey at $18 but a must see i the Keys and if it helps maintain the house then it’s worth it.

    Hemingway Newbies
We took a guided tour and highly recommend it. We knew virtually nothing about Hemingway when we entered, but learned so much from an energetic young man who was entertaining as well as knowledgeable. The cats are a cool bonus. Bought 2 Hemingway books at the conclusion of the tour and are looking forward to diving in.

I have been to Hemingway house many times over the last 20 years. On this last tour, which was I felt rushed, minimal information was given by the guide and minimal time was given to really look around the rooms. The tours can be reserved online only for specific time, giving the impression that there will be only a limited number of visitors in the house. That is not so. Walk in visitors that do not require tour are admitted in at any time so there are crowds of people everywhere. Everyone is required to wear a face mask. Even through the mask, I could smell slight odor of kitty litter throughout the entire house, that has never happened to me before. It’s an interesting place to visit for a fan of Hemingway, not so for teenagers.

Our experience at the Hemingway House was rough... but I'd go again under different circumstances.

Due to social distancing and some miscommunication by the person working the ticketing booth, we never made the tour of the home and just explored the gardens.

We didn't realize that it was a guided tour that was limited to 10 people per group. We waited our turn in line for a tour for more than half an hour, but with it being so hot, son got bored. When we went back to the ticketing booth to ask if we could just go in the gardens, the woman got slightly rude with my husband. We found another tour guide who was helpful.

We went into the gardens just to see the cats. The cats are awesome and so friendly, and we loved looking around to find them. We also downloaded the app for $2.99 to learn more about the cats. But, then our son got a little too comfortable with the cats. He was chasing the cats into the jungle of plants, and I was chasing him. We didn't want to get thrown out for terrorizing the cats so we cut our visit short.

I would have loved to take the tour and learn more about the property, but the wait for the tour was ridiculous, especially since we were not informed at the gate about it being a guided tour, or about the wait time. If we had known those two things, we may have skipped it.

Thank you so much for your review and feedback. I am glad you all enjoyed the cats and garden areas during your visit, but I will make sure I communicate with my staff today about explaining things more clearly. We also appreciate your understanding with all the regulations that are being installed upon us in this COVID era. We look forward to seeing you again and hopefully it will be with no regulations.

This house is situated at 907 Whitehead Street, Key West.
Be prepared to pay in cash at the front desk, credit cards are not accepted. Guided tours are available for those interested, but you can also walk around the house and garden on your own.
Do not miss the upper floor balcony where a scene of Timothy Dalton’s James Bond movie License to Kill was shot. The balcony is a wonderful photographic spot.

You may meet the famous six-toed cats on the premises, polydactyle cats, they are the descendants of Hemingway’s own cats. Infoboards are available for those interested in the cats’, house´s and Hemingway´s history. Depending on your level of interest you may spend 30 minutes to a few hours here.
There is a gift shop on the ground floor, selling books and souvenirs, as well as restrooms. This place easily becomes crowded, so plan a visit during the early hours for a more comfortable visit.

Even if you have never read a Hemingway novel (something I am guilty of) this is a fascinating place to visit. This Spanish Colonial style house was original built in 1851 and Hemingway lived here from 1931 until 1939 with his second wife Pauline. Only cash is accepted and the price of admission includes a 30-minute guided tour, the quality of which depends on the guide so make sure to walk through the house again to read some of the displays and snap a few photos. Highlights of the home include his writing room, pool, art, gardens and of course the famous 6-toed cats which roam the property freely.

Well maintained home with beautiful grounds and lots of cats. An excellent tribute to Mr. Hemingway's life and contributions to the Key West Community. Very crowded the day I went, but it was nice to see people appreciating it. Cash only to get in, so come prepared. Stop into the gift shop to pick up some of his works if you are unfamiliar-my personal favorite has always been The Sun Also Rises.

This is a tour really worth doing when visiting Key West. We went through first with a tour guide and then went through again by ourselves so that we had time to look at each room more carefully and read the historical information posted in each room. The photos throughout the house were really interesting.
A note - they only accept cash for admission to the museum and there are a lot of cats there.

We have been here once before and enjoyed it as much the second time. Each guide has his/her own way of describing Hemingway and his life. A heads up, they don't take credit cards for admission, cash only...$20/ adult for admission...not all of our party had cash...

The house opens at 9 and there was a line waiting at the door by 8:45 from
the cruise ships in town. They only accept CASH so make sure you have the $15 per person on you.

Take the tour with a tour guide— they do a nice job highlighting the house, pointing out the names of the cats, and telling stories. Plan on spending an hour to an hour and a half for the tour and walking the grounds.

This tour would not be very interesting for children.

The 30 minute guided tour is worth the minimal charge. Hear the various stories about Hemingway’s life, his passion for key west and all about the cats and their toes! The house is filled with pictures, information plaques that you can cycle back too after your tour. Beautiful grounds are nice to stroll through. Gift shop is hidden in the back of the home and fairly small. Spend your time touring about or petting the cats - there are a lot of them! Note: the tour does involve navigating some stairs.

I am a fan of Ernest Hemingway’s work and was excited to visit this museum. But my experience of this museum on Tues, Feb 4 (around 11:00 am - 12:30 pm) was marred by the rude treatment by staff of Asian tourists generally.

Our visit began with an unsettling encounter at the ticket booth of the museum. When my friend (British of Asian descent) greeted the old white man working at the ticket booth with a cheery “Hello”, he said nothing in return and stared back with hostility. So I (American of Asian descent) stepped in and said, “Two tickets please.” I politely handed him cash for the tickets, but instead of handing me the change and the tickets in return, he slapped the change and the tickets on the counter top. Given that this same man at the ticket booth had just been so friendly and courteous with the white tourists immediately in front of us, my friend and I were taken aback by how we were treated.

Later during the visit, feeling short of breath and lightheaded, I sat down in one of the plastic chairs outdoors on the front porch to rest. The old white man from the ticket booth had switched to becoming a tour guide. He walked up to me and said curtly, “Get up. Get up.” No “please”; no explanation of why he needed me to get up. I looked around in confusion as other tourists (all white) sitting in the other plastic chairs on the front porch were left in peace. He began pulling the chair out from under me while I stood up. Note that I also am obviously pregnant (6 months).

I was at a loss for words and glared at him. Perhaps it was a combination of noticing that I was pregnant or noticing that I was glaring at him, but he finally said something that showed that maybe he knew he had been incredibly rude: “Here you may sit here.” He moved the chair about two feet to the side and gestured for me to sit.

In light of the above experience, I would say the precious reviewers complaining of rude treatment of Asian tourists were spot on. My friend and I certainly felt targeted for no reason other than the fact that we were Asian in appearance. What a shame for this to be the experience that the caretakers of Ernest Hemingway’s legacy wish to pass along.
