Geiringer, Erich (Dr), 1917-1995

Wellington physician, writer, publisher, broadcaster, amateur dramatist and challenger of the status quo. Born Vienna, 31 Jan 1917; escaped from Nazi Germany, Mar 1938 and went to Belgium and then England, where he was briefly interned on the outbreak of war. Attended medical school, Edinburgh and Glasgow; Fulbright scholar, Boston and worked in London. Married secondly Carol Shand, 1964 (two sons, one daughter); medical practice in Wellington. Died 24 Aug 1995. [("For decades Erich would direct an annual play in the back garden of the family home in Karori, casting family and friends for a five-show season complete with props and constumes and orchestra" See internet about Erich Geiringer's son Felix Geiringer. Description: The collection comprises papers relating to Geiringer's involvement in medical and social issues, including the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War, the World Court Project, the Non-Proliferation Treaty, the International Court of Justice, UN, World Health Association, commissions of inquiry, medical and union matters. There are files relating to abortion and contraception, health reforms, psychiatry, medical research, the Wislang case, hospital politics, his book, `Malice in blunderland' and French nuclear testing. Source of title - Supplied title Arrangement: The collection was in considerable disorder when appraised. Tentative series identification has been made on the basis of form and subject, with several series bringing material of related subject into single artificial series Geiringer was born in Vienna and went to England before WWII, later studying medicine in Edinburgh. He arrived in NZ in 1959 to an appointment at Otago Medical School but later practised as a GP in Wellington with his wife, Carol Shand. His papers reflect his deep interests in human rights, politics, peace and social and medical issues, his activities from Radio Windy to the International Physicians for the Prevention of Nuclear War.
